See/Hear/Read
Last week, I shared that I was listening to the audiobook Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. It was weeks before I could borrow it on Libby; I checked the Audible app and could listen to it for free (it does require an Audible subscription). You can also find this novel on Hoopla, Spotify, and Listening Books via Overdrive.
While listening to it, Libby notified me that my hold for the second in the series, Parable of the Talents, was available. I accepted it, and immediately began to listen to it once I finished Sower. But because there is such interest in this series with all that is going on in our country, I wasn't able to renew and only got through a few chapters.
Yet again, I was able to listen to Parable of the Talents for free through Audible. I share this because this series is dystopian, but unlike other popular sci-fi/dystopian novels like The Handmaid's Tale, this series feels… hopeful. It also feels way closer to what we may experience in the near future. And like when I listened to the Outlander series, I feel I am learning skills and gathering information that may benefit me or others around me IRL.
Unlike Parable of the Sower, which was narrated by the late, great Lynne Thigpen, Parable of the Talents has three narrators (Patricia R. Floyd, Peter Jay Fernandez, and Sisi Aisha Johnson) to represent the first book's protagonist, her husband, and their daughter. It took a bit for me to connect to these new voices after the beautiful work of Tigpen, but I am still gobbling up this book.
For Your Entertainment
My husband and I were watching the E! GRAMMY red carpet and saw Julia Michaels mention a music video for a song she had with Maren Morris where women were castrating men. My husband said, “Well, you know what you're sharing for Weekend Reads!”
Thank you for the article links. The last few weeks have been unsettling and painful. Add in being a gov employee, less than one year. I am applying for jobs and it is rough right now. I hadn’t read those articles and appreciated them. Hugs. Keep up the great work! I love your posts.
The bra sale came at a good time. I’m returning to the office full time the end of the month & i need to replace my ratty/wrong size bras.
Thank you, thank you. I haven’t even made it through all the good stuff here yet but I will savor. I the awful troll’s plan to take over the Kennedy Center just before bed last night (on top of all the other crap) and knew I wouldn’t sleep. Took a sleeping pill that kinda worked. Woke up early, made coffee and opened WO thinking of distracting myself with fashion and found all these fascinating pieces I’d missed.
One half-dream, half-daydream I had was a massive crowd of DMV folks showing up to protest–all dressed fabulously! inVinnick would do nicely. In real life I have a big even in Paris in April and now I know where to start looking for an outfit.
I forgot where I read it – probably BBC since its coverage is less triggering than the legacy US media – & it raised the question of what authority lets him do this. So another lawsuit probably.
& he’s been *losing* the lawsuits. He’s not invincible. Here he & Musk lost the lawsuit on Treasury access. https://bsky.app/profile/normeisen.bsky.social/post/3lhjdoxlnf22h
The courts have also ruled against him on putting most USAID on admin leave. 2 or 3 have ruled against his birthright citizenship nonsense. There are more losses on more actions/EOs. They just aren’t sensational so not covered by legacy media. So we have to search them out.
