Weekend Reads was written on Tuesday (with a quick check Friday morning), as I have spent the rest of the week as an election judge in my county. Our county's executive was Angela Alsobrooks, and now that she's a Senator, we are having a special election for her replacement. I was tapped for early voting and election day, so for a week, I'll have 12-hour days without access to a phone or laptop, assisting folks with voting.

With how the world has been going, there is a good chance everything in this is out of date, and major things have taken place that are not being mentioned. How I hope this will not be true and the week as mild as the weather we are having in the D.C. Metro area.

A trend I am seeing for spring/summer is light pink mixed with red. This short-sleeved sweater is a very wearable option.

How Quince, the one-stop shop for everything from cashmere sweaters to caviar, seduced a generation of jaded shoppers. (The Cut)

After my Quince home products review, a few asked if I tried Quince jeans. I have the Relaxed Straight and the Straight, but I got them so early on they didn't have inseam options and had different names. I am usually a 14 in jeans, I got both in 32, and they fit comfortably. They don't stretch out fast; the weight is heavier than Old Navy but just as stretchy, and they're fine. They don't make my butt look amazing or whittle any part of me but they are sturdy, get-er-done jeans in a decent wash/color.

See/Hear/Read

If you saw The Queen's Gambit (Netflix), you too may have a little place in your heart for Anya Taylor-Joy. So when we saw she was in an action film with Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick, Divergent) we were down. The Gorge is currently streaming on Apple TV+.

I think The Gorge was written by a 17-year-old, or maybe AI was asked to write a film that would be a favorite of 17-year-olds.

One of these watch towers, on either side of the gorge, keeps what's in, in, and what's out, unknowing.

So there's this gorge in an unknown place in the world (though the topography and weather say northern hemisphere, maybe Canada or a part of Scandinavia). Fog hides its contents, and a single individual stays in the watchtower, ensuring nothing emerges from the gorge. There is also a watchtower on the other side of the gorge. This secret, cloaked gorge has been watched in this fashion since the 1940s.

Daughter, I will take your sorrows and make you sad on Valentine's Day. Have fun laying low in a watch tower.

Miles Teller is Levi, an ex-Marine sharpshooter who was retired because he failed some psychological exam. Even so, he's considered one of the best shots in the world. He is assigned one watch tower. Anya Taylor-Joy, a Lithuanian sniper named Drasa, must lay low for a year and is assigned to the other watch tower.

Through a large notepad and a dry-erase board, Levi and Drasa form a friendship and then, thanks to a line gun, a romance. Together, they goof around between the moments they have to fight to keep what is in the gorge down there. And then the two of them end up down in the gorge, which is when things get really weird and video-game-like.

I can be covered in ectoplasm, but my hair and makeup will still look fabulous!

It's December in the northern hemisphere, and Drasa is dancing around in a cami and bike shorts. While Levi grows a beard over the months, Taylor-Joy maintains an adorable wavy bob with bangs.

Of course both watchtowers have chess boards!

The watch towers haven't been updated since the 1940s, yet they have vinyl records of contemporary music, large sketch pads, men's suits, and plenty of alcohol (at least on Drasa's side).

Finding out WTF is in the Gorge

In the gorge, it's gross and violent and badass and surreal and creepy and I may be a grown-ass woman, but I watched a good ten minutes with my back to the screen. The reason for the gorge and what is in it doesn't make much sense at all, but none of the film does. The Gorge is ridiculous, but I still think it's better than Star Trek: Section 31. And it's definitely not boring.

  1. The striped shirt link asks me to prove I’m a human, which I apparently am not. I could never get it to work, can you fix or just add a name and retailer?

  2. “I think the Gorge was written by a 17-year-old boy.” YES! My husband and I started watching it, then quickly paused the show and texted our 14-year-old (who was upstairs) to come down and watch with us because we knew this was his kind of show. You’re review is spot on. Other shows you might like that weren’t written by teens are Day of the Jackal (Peacock) and A Cruel Love, the Ruth Ellis story on Brit Box.

  3. I had to laugh, because I started reading the article from PC Magazine and the magazine asked for my email and wouldn’t let me read any further. All I need is another site sending me updates and ads. LOL.
