I love my husband, and I find him to be a brilliant photographer… when he is on assignment and behind his own camera. He sucks with my little Canon Powershot. Seriously, this outfit is cute. My coworker C exclaimed, “Cuuuute!” when she saw me, and she sees me every day, has great taste, and only makes such an exclamation when it really is an exclamation-worthy outfit. So, I am trying to figure out a way to have better quality pictures without ruining my quality of life.
I love you guys, I really do, and I want to have great pictures for this blog. However I don't have the time to pose, pose, pose. To find really cool backgrounds, to manipulate them in Photoshop or another tool. My pictures are taken in about 30 seconds. My husband, Emerson and I head out to my husband's car. We put Emerson in the car seat and turn on the heat. Then I remove my coat and take a picture, sometimes two. I don't even LOOK at what my husband captured until I am on the Metro, sometimes not until I get to work. Then once at work… well I work. I do these posts usually during my lunch break, and I write them up pretty quickly.
My husband and I are considering in 2011 to have him take the pictures with his nice 5D, and then hand me the memory card. I will have a card reader at work so I can retrieve the pics in that manner. Still no time for manipulation, but at least it's a better quality camera.
But I wonder for those of you who have your own style blogs – how do you do it? How do you find the time for nice poses, nice locations, editing of the photos? Do you do it at night after work and post the next day? Does a partner edit them for you? If you use a tripod and timer or remote, how long do you take for your photo sessions, and where the heck do you take such pictures where the space can be left pretty empty and tidy? Is this a problem for me because I have a toddler? Because I don't work from home? Because I post outfits almost every day? I love blogging, and I want my blog to be pretty as well as informative, but I really don't know how to maximize this aspect of the blog without minimizing quality of life. I appreciate any suggestions or advice from you all!
I like your blog. I am a fashion misfit and I really needed some ideas. Thanks
Thanks Nyika! I actually did wear it recently under a jacket, and I agree, it is far more flattering!
I think and open fitted jacket (mid hip length) would make you look better. This scoop neck stripy top isn’t really doing much for your shape. (sorry, but I think it would look better if it was just peeping out from under a jacket).
You guys are the best, thank you SO much for your feedback! Making me feel far better with the setup I have now!
This is so very pretty and totally cute as your co worker said.
I take max 5 pictures every morning, use my Nokia cel on a timer.
Upload the pics as soon as I get to work and post during lunch.
I wonder how other bloggers do it, I wish I had better pictures too….
If you had fancy-schmancy pictures of yourself I would quit reading your blog – because it would show that your priorities were way out of line. I much prefer knowing that you took the time to enjoy your family.
Balance. That it what I am looking for, and what I feel you encourage and model. Brava!
OOoooooo, Super super cute and chic! Your pictures sound like mine, hehe ๐
I usually only snap one or possibly two, but I am afraid to step outside, lest my neighbors start talking about the crazy lady who takes pictures of herself, LOL.
Your comments mean the world to me – thank you so much everyone!!!
Very cute outfit, and I have been noticing that your weight loss is definitely visible. Congrats!
I have a camera on a tripod in our home office permanently. I scoot in there every morning for a couple of minutes and shoot some photos. I lose out on being able in natural sunlight, but I don’t have to depend on anyone else taking photos for me. I did use my camera on a Gorillapod while I was on vacation and I would have loved to continue to do that but there is no private place outdoors close to my home where I could shoot as fast as I do in the office.
I like the whole look. I like the shoes too although they don’t photograph well. ( I’ve even seen celebrities in similar shoes and they just don’t photograph well…)
It is indeed a REALLY cute outfit! I was reading thinking, “I like the photos you post! What are you talking about…)
The whole outfit is really cute, but Allie, that bag is AMAZING. I am so jealous.
It’s the smile! I love your pretty smile and real attitude. Some fashion bloggers have this model-like scowl and ridiculous poses (ugh!). Keep doing what you’re doing!
Allison, I agree with majority of the readers who have posted comments above. Your photos are fab the way they are, no need to change! I’d rather see daily “less professional” photos of you than see fewer photos, more professionally staged or manipulated. You always capture the spirit of what you wear and I think that is the most important thing you convey…and BTW, your outfit is adorable. ๐
Sorry, clarification – what I was attempting to say is I grow weary of the multitude of other blogs that seem to exist with the fake photos. THIS blog I find to be delightfully refreshing!

Another regular reader chiming in to say I adore the way your blog is – so real and always the one I am happiest to see updated. I get so very tired of jumping in the wind pigeon toed in ‘care of ______’ outfits each and every day!
I LOVE your blog the way it is and will always read it! Thanks for putting all the time and hard work you put into it!

I LOVE that outfit. So cute!
And as with others, I wanted to say that I love the way you take your pictures – they’re more “real” than other style blogs. If I wanted glossy pictures with close ups of details, I’d read more magazines.
I love that outfit on you and am always excited to see photos on your blog. There is nothing wrong with the pictures you post – no need to go into extensive editing etc. I like the “real life” aspect of an outfit way more than the catalog version.
Cute outfit…except the shoes. I think they are not very flattering, look sorta wobbly, and I just cannot get into open toes shoes with tights!
As for the pics, no advice here. I take awful iPhone pics of myself in the mirror!I don’t have time in my life for more than that!
Great outfit. I’m stealing that idea.
In terms of photos, please don’t change. I looked at a lot of fashion blogs before winnowing them down to the five I added to Google Reader.
Blogs with photos that were blurry or too dark to see color or detail didn’t make the cut. But I also didn’t care for blogs with artificial, overposed, ten pictures in a row that look almost the same, oh-I-always-saunter-through-the-park-like-this photos. If I want an OTT photoshopped shoot, I’ll just read Vogue, thank you very much. Like a previous commenter said, your blog feels like “real life.” Real life is what I’m looking for.
However, I wouldn’t complain if you threw in a close-up of those earrings. ๐
I am new to the world of style blogging, and use a timer. My husband, although I love him dearly, is not a good photographer. I usually give myself about 15 minutes to snap pictures, and really haven’t mastered the art of editing and manipulation. So it’s hit or miss ๐
I usually take my photos in the morning, before work. I always take them inside my house. I don’t have time to take thme outside or do editing or anything like that. I usually just snap the detail shots (shoes & brooch) and then 2 or 4 outfit shots. Normally its just 2. (my camera has a self timer that takes 2 photos at a time.) Then once I get to work, I put the post together and publish it. On gym days, I do the post then take & post the pics later.
I agree with @Laurie F. Your photos are awesome the way they are. I trust you more than other style bloggers because you don’t engage in photo manipulation. You are the real deal … Embrace it!
speaking as someone who is only just married and has no kids, i dont know how you find the time every day!
im a bad blogger and havent posted a real update in month — first i was too busy planning the wedding, but now it is freezing outside! i dont know how you can snap your photos out there coatless, but im still shivering with my 50 layers on! i have been trying to find a corner somewhere inside the house, but so far, no luck — as is reflected by my STILL un-updated blog…
i need to find somewhere quick!
so if you get any good suggestions or ideas, please do share with us!
Well I did have a bit of a baguette with my lunch! Love that visual – will have to wear this to the farmer’s market this Spring! ๐
I’m not a style blogger, just a style blog reader, but I like the realistic locations and poses of your pictures. As another DC working mom, I can relate to a picture in your work bathroom after getting up at o’dark thirty much more than a carefully posed shot on a perfect windswept landscape.
Very cute today, with a bit of Parisian flair. You just need a baguette and some greens peeking out of your bag as accessories!
I LOVE the red bag and belt with this combo. LOFT and Ann Taylor are some of my FAVE. stores. Everything is great there.
Very cute ensemble! I love the striped tops.
