Leggings are not pants! I've said this many times, yet I dare to stand here in the middle of the street in a pair of them? On weekends I'll admit I wear them with tunics and long sweater coats like this one.ย When dashing around town from Girl Scouts to dance class to Target to the dry cleaner's to the market (and a stop at Starbucks to keep going) I want something comfortable, easy, and machine washable.ย These leggings from Svelte are nice; the double-knit ponte maintains opacity even when stretched and the built in tummy tucking panel keeps things smooth.ย I've washed these leggings multiple times and they maintained their color without a single pill or fuzz ball.ย If you're considering them, I recommend if you're between sizes go down since the quality material and construction prevents all the issues with most leggings.
Karl calls this sweater my Matrix jacket; it has become one of the most-worn things in my closet with these frigid temps.ย The cashmere is super thick and plush and warm and the real leather lined sleeves are are also warm and protect me from the wind and I wrap the waterfall part around me to stay cozy.ย Tall boots add a layer of warmth (there's cashmere knee socks under there) and a level of style to what essentially is luxe loungewear and comfy cozy weekend garb!
I wear leggings ALL THE DAMN TIME! They’re so comfortable and I feel way better about myself when I’m wearing leggings than jeans and most other pants. I usually wear them with tops that are a little bit longer just so I don’t feel super exposed. Since I’m a big believer in wearing things that make you feel good about yourself, I won’t stop wearing leggings, haha. I always wear thicker leggings though, just because they’re warmer and feel more supportive (the jersey ones from Old Navy are super thick and structured – I love them!!).
I love wearing leggings and you look fabulous. I know we all know that leggings are not pants but how can you not wear them? Leggings go with everything, they’re easy to through on and they are by far the most comfortable article of clothing I own. Some days I put a pair of leggings on thinking I will just be dropping the kids off at school but before I get home I’ve been to post office, drug store and stopped for a coffee at Starbucks. All the time I am racing around town wearing leggings as pants and I never even took time to see how I looked in the mirror before stepping out the door. In find leggings worn with nude silk pantyhose underneath is much warmer then wearing jeans. No VPL and nobody knows your wearing under garments from the 70’s. As long as your top covers most of your butt I think leggings can be a great substitute for pants. Just don’t wear them in Montana!
You are clearly a man. Why don’t you just say you’re a man?
Because it doesn’t matter. This piece is about leggings, not gender. Some men wear leggings, and they too have opinions on them.
I have absolutely no problems with men wearing leggings as pants in public. I was addressing Rosario, because he keeps saying he is a woman, when he is a man. It’s okay to admit you’re a man wearing leggings. Leggings are a unisex item.
Speaking of which, when men do wear leggings in public, they get attacked much more than women for being gay, cross dressing or a pervert. Women don’t get that. I guess that’s why some men pretend to be women when they do wear leggings in public.
Thanks for coming back and clarifying!
You haven’t spoke about men wearing leggings.
I resonate with this post, I have a love/hate relationship with leggings. I love how comfy they are but they don’t help with watching my weight. I will only wear leggings with tunics & long cardigans. This outfit is right up my alley.

Hope to see you Thursday for TBT Fashion link up.
Oh boy, this is timely topic. A couple of weeks ago I wore my black leggings with a long cardigan sweater thinking only of covering my behind. I got to work (drank some coffee and woke up a bit) and realized that I was wearing a shell tank top and the coverage in the front was totally inadequate. Mainly the shell was too short and too snug. I felt like I was in that dream where you go to work or school and realize you forgot to put on pants! Not cool. I spent a lot of time glued to my desk that day. You’ve pulled off the perfect styling of them. Longer layers are key. ๐
YES! It also helps that these leggings have the tummy control feature and are thicker/more opaque than usual but leggings really don’t leave much to the imagination, do they? Three cheers for long layers!
I would like to say AMEN! I know that leggings aren’t pants but PROPER leggings CAN BE PANTS! I always want to yell that from the roof when people go on tangents about it!

I love leggings! And you look super cute in your outfit!
Those aren’t really leggings–just superskinny ponte pants. I think the issue with leggings as pants is when they are made out of material like tights, rather than trouser material.
I agree too…I rarely wear them because I feel like I’m in my workout wear….but alas, when in Rome! Alison does the Tim Gunn test— I do the ex-boyfriend test–if I saw an ex, would he think “wow”? Jodie

I love wearing leggings but do you not find they’re just a bit cold? On days like these I’d rather wear jeans even if they’re a bit less comfortable!
I don’t find these and other ponte leggings cold. The thick knit I find more cozy than jeans and pants! Regular leggings however are far too thin for this weather! ๐
I agree. I have some riding pants/leggings that I wore this past weekend. They were purchased from Ann Taylor a few seasons back with a different brand name. They did absolutely nothing to protect me from the cold even with a down knee length jacket and knee high boots. Next time, I’ll wear them with thermal underwear.
I agree with you on both points! Leggings aren’t pants, but I think wearing them with tunics and long sweaters (ie, your bum is covered) is fine. When I leave the house I often think, would I be OK with Tim Gunn seeing me in this? Outfits like this pass the test (I hope he would agree!)
Also, have you tried the linen v-neck t-shirts from Target? They are FANTASTIC. Perfectly long and drapey (but not sloppy), they are great with leggings. They are thin but have a nice weight to them, so they feel a bit more substantial than a cotton tee. And they wash like a dream — I live in mine!
Thanks for the tip Alison (great name BTW!), I’ll be sure to check those t-shirts out!
Oooh, I’ll have to try them. Loft has great linen tees, but you might want to size down one or even two.
