Does this look familiar?ย  I wore almost this same look on the blog last summer.ย  This jumpsuit (which is still available) has been a great purchase; it's stretchy, lightweight and best of all, it doesn't require one to be double-jointed to use the facilities!ย  This denim jacket from J. Crew Factory has been such a good buy; it gets better with each wear and washing.ย  Wardrobe staples don't have to be expensive or classic styles, it's about your personal style, your life, your figure as to what becomes closet workhorses.ย  For some it may be a trench or a crisp white shirt, for others it may be a distressed denim jacket and a jersey jumpsuit!

  1. This post is reminding me that a denim jacket is on my wish list! I’ve heard good things from multiple people about J Crew, just a shame it’s so expensive in the UK ๐Ÿ™

  2. so never in a million years would I have considered a jumpsuit – but I would wear this entire outfit, and I now find myself thinking hmmmmmm…maybe I could do this….might pull out the ol’ Nordstrom card and give it a whirl.

  3. You always look so pulled together, even in a simple outfit. I can’t ever put my finger on exactly what it is, which is too bad because I need to start doing it. You always have outfits, and I seem to just have clothes. It’s magic!

    1. My sentiments exactly!

I admire Alison’s style, and yet I’m jealous. I’ve been working on my wardrobe for a couple of years now, and let me tell you, progress is so slow and it’s not for lack of effort. I don’t know what it is, I just seem to have a really hard time *getting* it. If there is such a thing as outfit dyslexia I must have it. And really, I’m quite happy with my body (not that it’s perfect, but I’m at a pretty healthy and attractive shape and size for my body) so that’s not the problem either (though I do want to dress to flatter my figure).

I seem to be catching on, ever so slowly. But I think I’ll just have to come to terms with that I can look good-ish, ok+, maybe even cute in some of my outfits, but I won’t ever be a fashinosta like Alison. I won’t have CUTE!!! looks like Alison often does.

Ah well, it takes all kinds. ๐Ÿ™‚ This just isn’t one of my talents.

And I also seem to only do well and feel comfortable with very very simple looks. And my clothes must be super comfortable, or I Just. Won’t. Wear. Them! One of my saving graces is that I’m willing to buy multiples. I found a sleevless shirt last year that’s super comfy (I don’t even feel like I have to wear a bra, because the breast pockets cover my nipples, sorry if this is TMI) and looks pretty cute, and I bought a bunch of them. So happy I did that.

Oh, one last thing, I hear many people advice that you should only buy things you’re 100% happy with. Maybe that works for a lot of people, but not for me at all, as I hate shopping and hardly ever find anything I’m 100% happy with.

      1. Maria, you have inspired me to write about this… post to come! But do know looks can be deceiving. The outfits on the blog are ones I like. There’s shoots that never make it to the blog, outfits I wear on the daily I never consider having photographed. Then with the outfits shot, there’s the photos I choose to use from the over hundred that are taken.

But then from another standpoint, I worked in apparel and retail for almost a decade. I spent 8-12 hours a day around clothing, dressing women, and having the time to try on a lot of clothes and get to know the line I was selling but also my own body. I’ve been photographing what I wear for over a decade, and I have an audience who hasn’t been afraid to give me the feedback friends and family may not, helping me to refine my style. Also the photographs give a better effect than looking at my reflection.

As for being 100% happy, that’s tough when most women aren’t an off the rack size, and usually can’t afford what they’d really love or it’s not available in their size or area. There’s very little in my closet I 100% love, and often if I do love it, a year later I don’t because my body, my mindset, or my style has changed.

The best advice is know yourself. There’s nothing wrong, in fact I think most women would LOVE a wardrobe of simple looks that are comfortable. And not everything in that wardrobe has to be an OMG I LOOOOOVE THIS piece. Sometimes you buy things just to not be naked the next day, or so you look appropriate for a wedding or meeting. But it’s truly thinking about what you own, what you DO like and WHY so you can learn from it and constantly refine and improve with each new piece in your closet! I’m still learning! ๐Ÿ™‚

    2. It’s my job, to be honest. Having this blog I think about outfit posts and Snapchat shares when buying. How can I wear this in different ways? What will this jacket go with besides a simple tank and jeans? What accessory could give a different effect to what I already own? What did I buy that has been super successful – what made it successful and can I find those elements in future purchases. If I didn’t have this blog and work on my style, I doubt it would be as cohesive ๐Ÿ™‚
