People often say it's hot enough to fry an egg, well the day these pictures were taken I think it really could have happened.ย  So hot, blazing sun, and high humidity.ย  What does a gal wear to look semi-professional when slogging through boiling pea soup?ย  Shift dresses!ย  I bought this one from Vince Camuto at Nordstrom last year (last worn in this post) and it is one of the hardest working pieces in my summer wardrobe.ย  While some may feel a lined dress is extra heavy and hot, it does such a good job of hiding the sweat and it sticks to me instead of the dress, leaving a smoother and more professional appearance on the outside.ย  The fabric doesn't wrinkle easily and dries quickly, and the length makes it so I can slip a pair of Thigh Society shorts underneath (they recently sent me two pairs and they're pretty darn fantastic!) to prevent chafing and to help with sweat cling.

Come summer, I pare down most makeup and balance it with a bold lip.ย  I picked up this lip pen from L'Oreal and I love how it's sticky enough to stay but not so much your lips feel heavy and gross.ย  It has a nice shine but isn't as intense as a traditional lip gloss.ย  A bit of liquid liner (stays in place far better than pencil when it's humid) and a long-wearing mascara (I rarely wear waterproof but find Lancome Defincils holds up great through sweat, allergy rubs, and even tears) gives me a finished look even if I'm hard-core glistening.

Update: Received a few emails and comments about Thigh Society and figured I'd do a review here since I won't be able to do a proper review post until I get back from vacation and that's late in summer/prime chub rub season.ย  While I am happy with Skimmies, I am always on the lookout for great products to prevent chub rub.ย  I also look for brands that offer larger sizes; Thigh Society goes up to 3XL/4XL which is the equivalent of 22-24.ย  Thigh Society sent me two pairs – the mid rise in beige, and the high rise in black.ย  I got both in the L/XL size.

While Skimmies feel as though they're made of fabric similar to the top of control top hosiery or Spanx, Thigh Society's panty shorts are a knit, similar to high quality leggings but these are NOT bike shorts.ย  First things, there's no seams which is HUGE when you're hot and sweaty.ย  This also makes them super comfortable to wear in place of underwear; seriously they're great on their own.ย  Secondly, Thigh Society shorts have an inner thigh panel of a fabric that wicks away moisture.ย  This feature is pretty awesome, for it prevents swamp crotch/swamp butt.ย  You ladies may not admit it but you know what I'm referring to!

With this different fabric, I find the shorts more visible if I am wearing a fitted, thin jersey, clingy dress.ย  But as you see in the photos above, it doesn't show on a looser fit dress that is either lined or a heavier/not stretchy fabric.ย  I've worn them under a swing style jersey tee shirt dress, but don't like them under my more fitted one of a similar fabric.ย  They also aren't of a silky fabric, so they can cause a bit of cling with the wrong fabrics, especially if the dress is fitted.ย  But the thing is, most of my summer dresses are the type that do work with such undergarments, and I adore the wicking feature (as an update, I got the wicking option from Skimmies and they fit differently, have a weird fabric that feels weird when my thighs rub together, and they don't wick as well as Thigh Society).

Size.ย  I got the L/XL and I could have possibly gone down a size, but am comfortable in this one.ย  The mid rise is a hair shorter than the original Skimmies but not as short as their short length.ย  It's that sweet spot that works with above the knee dresses but doesn't ride up or expose too much thigh.ย  The high rise also works, but on my petite self, they go up past my natural waist and closer to my knees; being 5'3″ I can only wear these under loose midi or maxi dresses. If you have any other questions, let me know!

  1. I love (cotton) lined dresses in summer for the same reason – the outer layer stays looking much better.

And I love my Thigh Society thigh savers! I’ve been wearing them for about 3 years now. Although I had the same issue with the high rise: far too high for my short waist, heh.

  2. The second and fourth photos in this post are two of my favorites ever on this blog. Super cute and ultra flattering shots! Great outfit too. ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. Love this dress, makes you look so bright and cheery. And I’ve had chub rub no matter how small I am but I still love skimmies the most.

  4. You’re on a roll with the colourful dresses of late!! I think this one would be cool with leopardprint shoes as well, or your mustard sandals? And that bag pairs perfectly.
I’m really jealous as I love the concept of a summer shift dress (and keep trying them on to no avail!) but I have disproportionate boobs for the rest of my frame and they always look TERRIBLE.

  5. OK, thank you for posting about the under garment. This is what I was looking for! My natural waist, where i bend when leaning over, is right ABOVE my belly button. Almost every other product just has a length that looks like it would hit my hip. This high waist looks like it might work! Especially since they have a big girl in some of the pictures. Perfect!

  6. Great dress! Do you prefer Thigh Society to Skimmies? I’m thinking of buying some more slip shorts so I can wear dresses more often in the summer. Which do you think are better?

  7. Hahah, at least you did not have steam coming from the cement. That’s how hot it can get here ๐Ÿ™ I think you look amazing in this dress. The length is perfect, the neckline, shape, colors…and it doesnt wrinkle.
