the best raincoats for women for every activity and situation picks by wardrobe oxygenEach spring I am drawn to all the pretty lightweight coats and jackets… but so few of them are actually practical. Living on the Eastern Seaboard of the USA, spring means April showers (and March showers), blustery days, and the need for wind and rain protection. I shop for Emerson and see the greatest raincoats – jackets that will truly keep you dry in a downpour, have hoods, ventilation, are windproof yet not bulky and not too athletic. Where are the equivalents for grown ups? Well someone heard our wishes and this spring there's fantastic raincoats, waterproof trenches, and wind-repelling jackets of all styles that marry practicality with style. My picks for the best raincoats for women for any situation:

The Best Raincoats to Pack in the Trunk for Unexpected Downpours

the best rain ponchos for womenMy sister bought me a poncho a decade ago and it was one of the best gifts. While those plastic sheet-like disposable ponchos are great in a pinch, why not prepare in advance with one that can take a beating, will last more than one storm, and maybe even have a double life for tailgates and picnics?

  1. Great post! Raining now and I am wo dering if I want somethig other than my basic black North Face Goretex.

  2. This is a seriously useful post since I have been hunting for a raincoat lately. Just ordered the Ralph Lauren one – yippeee!! thanks again!

  3. I own one in each category you list. I try to buy light colors so when it’s dark I can be seen. So all of mine need to be washable.

  4. These are all such great options! I feel like I’ve struggled for years to find a rain jacket that I truly love—they have either been too thin, too warm, too noisy, too youthful looking, etc. I ordered the one J Crew has out now, in the pink color. It’s very cute and I love the longer backside! I had to return it b/c I went with a large and it was way too big. My local store only had navy so I went with that in a medium. I’m hopeful I’ve finally found one I’ll be happy with (I’ve already pulled the tags off or I’d probably consider one of these options).

  5. I live in Seattle and have a couple of raincoats (casual, dressy, etc.). One of the best coats is from Costco and it’s only $20. (Yes, it is waterproof and breathable!)
I purchased the first coat about 4 years ago then lost some weight and bought a smaller size the next year. I wear it all the time and just picked up another one in a different color so I have one that is a neutral and another that is a fun color. The coat comes in a pouch that zips and is great for traveling as it squishes down to almost nothing but retains it’s shape and appearance after unpacking.
They also have a similar coat in Men’s.

  6. I love my LLBean rain jacket! It does fold up into its pocket so very convenient on a trip or long bike ride.

  7. May I add one more to your list? Boden makes a Mac that is AH-MAZING. I bought mine I want to say 3 years ago now it’s fantastic. Detachable hood, fleece lined pockets, buttons and zips and mine is a lovely bright green and blue plaid. It’s great for fall into early winter and then I bring it back for spring.
