T.J.Maxx Metro Center: The 1000th Store comes to Washington D.C.
Today marks a momentous occasion for T.J.Maxx – their 1,000th store opens. It also marks a momentous occasion for all DC fashionistas – this store is in our very city at Metro Center! A great new location, and a convenient one right at the Metro Center stop on the Metro! Last night I had the opportunity to tour the new T.J.Maxx Metro Center and learn a bit about the company.
The New T.J.Maxx Metro Center
The new DC T.J. Maxx is utterly FABULOUS. I have been a “Maxxinista” since middle school. I even scored one of my prom dresses at T.J.Maxx! I always love finding designer and on-trend pieces for less and knowing that discount price doesn't mean sub-par quality. I have been to a good dozen different T.J.Maxx stores over the years. This one blows the rest out of the water.
When you enter the doors, you see a few accessories, but when you take the escalator down, you are amazed at the incredible size (over 28,000 square feet!) and airiness of the store. A huge jewelry area with display cases full of on-trend necklaces and bracelets leads you to well-organized departments for clothing, shoes, menswear, children, beauty, luggage, and home. I also loved the displays – mannequins, display cubes, and T-fixtures to break up the rolling rack monotony and showcase really great pieces.
The T.J.Maxx Metro Center has The Runway – a department that showcases high-end designer clothing and accessories at fabulous T.J.Maxx discount prices. T.J.Maxx doesn’t like anyone to state what brands are featured, but these pictures hopefully will give you an example of the amazing designers available!
Along with chi chi brands, T.J.Maxx has a lot of popular department-store brands and styles that are currently popular and available at regularly-priced retailers. Unlike department stores, which purchase new merchandise monthly or quarterly, T.J.Maxx buyers shop weekly, reacting to the most current trends for up-to-date fashion. Each store receives around 10,000 new pieces weekly, so your local T.J.Maxx can be a completely different store each time you visit.
T.J.Maxx doesn’t just buy from big brands; they have over 15,000 vendors they work with, which means you may find big covetable brand names, or you may find a unique leather bag from an independent designer in Florence or a beautiful bowl crafted from a beachside Thai artist. I can attest to this, owning a gorgeous hand-painted tablecloth from India that I found at T.J.Maxx and could never find at any local retailer.
T.J.Maxx may have low prices, but they do not have low quality. Over 85% of the merchandise in their stores is current – anything from last season is marked and priced as such (except for items that don’t change with the trends, like holiday gift wrap). Also, 95% of T.J.Maxx merchandise is the first quality (the same quality you find at department stores), and the other 5% is marked as such and has a lower ticket price. I saw the same dress I bought at Nordstrom last month on a rack for almost 50% of what I paid.
The new Metro Center T.J.Maxx is located at 601 13th St, NW, and is open 9:30 am to 9:30 pm Monday-Saturday and 11:00 am to 8:00 pm on Sundays. I encourage you to check it out, and report back to let me know what great deals you scored!
Thank you to T.J.Maxx Metro Center for inviting me to your preview. A gift card was provided to attendees, but there was no expectation for promotion. I chose to write this review as a PSA for my fellow residents of the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia).
omg this is AMAZING!!! I wish my TJ Maxx store had such great stuff!!
i have often wondered the same thing, so i googled it and found this:
“T.J. Maxx, adopted the name T.K. Maxx for stores in the UK, Ireland,
Germany and Poland to avoid confusion with the existing but separate
discount chain T J Hughes”
no idea if thats correct, but it sounds plausible!
im game! your schedule is probably tighter than mine, so you let me know!
Honestly? I shop primarily online because I don’t like shopping and stores like TJ Maxx usually give me hives. I hope this one stays spacious and clean so it can be enjoyable to shop for bargains. And you’re right, the woman from TJ Maxx said the buyers fill stores based on where they are located, like the DC one has a big Runway area and lots of suiting.
Hey, DC is only two hours from Philly! 😉
I was drooling over some blue Ikat-print sheets from DVF that they had there. Totally don’t go with my bedroom decor but so pretty. I shold go back and see if I can find some that actually coordinate!
Their shoe department was insane – I saw shoes I currently own for over 50% off!
I like that idea 🙂
I’ve never been to a TJ Maxx and I’ve been intrigued by their commercials but now I’m definitely going to have to go check out the one in DC! (It would help if I wasn’t broke, lolz)
I’ve been to a few decent TJMaxx’s and some really crummy ones. Most that I’ve been in are fairly small with narrow aisles. I often find thin, cheap clothing or more expensive brands in styles I would never wear. The shoe aisles I’ve seen are always so jumbled. I really think the store inventory varies a lot based on where it’s located. I’ve had more success at stores located in higher class neighborhoods, but I’m not a huge fan of TJMaxx. Truthfully, I don’t enjoy clothes shopping and am not a clothes trendy person, but I still enjoy following your blog.
It’s one of my favorite stores !
The shoe racks have me drooling. I’m in a Philly suburb and while I do shop at a local TJ Maxx, it’s not nearly as big as this one. Sigh.
I’m so excited there is a TJ Maxx downtown now and so glad we got to hang out a bit on Tuesday! I went back yesterday and got 2 dresses, a pair if shoes, a pack of those “skinny” hangers and some Elizabeth Arden lotion. Oh man, this is going to be trouble!!
Yeah, it’s really close to the Smithsonian… AND on my way to the bus home. So really, I have no reason to NOT stop in every day…I’m not even going out of my way!
LOL it’s only one Metro stop away from my office, it could be very bad (yet oh so good) for me and my lunch hour!
I was in there yesterday after work and I’m 95% sure I’ll be back again today after work. THIS IS BAD. But so, so good!! And near my work 🙂
I love TJ Maxx for household goods, especially sheets and bed linens. I went through a phase of deep fitting mattresses for our bed and ended up with almost a dozen different styles and colors, and the Maxx helped me keep it affordable yet tasteful.
I have no idea- rather baffling, isn’t it? Especially since the shop’s concept (& even layout!) is exactly the same in each. Maybe they thought the letter ‘J’ would be less marketable to a UK audience? Who knows, haha?
sounds like a good place to meet up one day for lunch and shopping. 😉
I live in Novi, MI & am a regular at my TJ Maxx. In the last year, I’ve removed 42 lbs & they have saved my life with affordable, quality transition wardrobe pieces plus cute, trendy tops & accessories!!!
Awesome!
I believe it is the same brand, wonder why the different initial for the UK?
Oh gosh, not sure. It’s actually on F Street, and very unassuming from the street. I don’t remember where Garfinkel’s was, though I do know it’s close to the old Woodies 🙂
I’ve never been to a TJ Maxx, but those shoe aisles have me drooling…
Is it where Garfinkle’s was?
This looks just like the TK Maxx here in Birmingham (UK)- how bizzare! I never quite figured out why they call it TK Maxx over here though (rather than TJ Maxx)…
Me too, I hope it stays easy to shop. So many stores end up cramming racks together, this one felt spacious like a regular department store. 🙂
I’m excited to see, I hope it all remains pretty and clean so i can find all the shoes I want! haha!
I bought one of my prom dresses at the Maxx too! It was gorgeous!
Nope, it’s over near Warner Theater. Filene’s is still empty. 🙁
Is this where Filene’s Basement was?
