Happy Friday everyone! While I am glad for the week to be over, I am a bit stressed over this weekend. Emerson's birthday is Sunday and I have had no time to prepare in any way. Tomorrow I will be a maniac, taking down the tree, cleaning like crazy, and buying supplies from the grocery and most likely Party City. We're not doing anything fancy or Pinterest-worthy – she's only three and won't even fully appreciate it. Just some bright colors, fun kid-friendly noshes and maybe a play crown since she's super into princesses right now! If I am lucky I'll have time to stop by the cobbler and pick up my new DUO boots – I'd love to see how they turned out, hopefully rock them and provide a full review of my latest experience with DUO!

Oh, I know the feeling. They are very overwhelming for the younger kids. I bet your party was great and the kids had a fabulous time. I’m thinking about just having people over at the house again for her #2 bday. Have some friends over to play with the toys Santa brought.. 🙂
Thanks Courtney! We got some regular balloons to decorate with and give the kids when they left, but we forgot to pass them out but to one kid. E was so overwhelmed by it all she even tried to go take a nap mid-party. No point in a theme and fancy decorations, the kids are happy enough with her play kitchen and juice boxes!

Oh my god, I am so happy to hear that you aren’t buying in to the birthday craziness just yet. I felt like I was the only one. I honestly get stressed out thinking about birthday time only because the OTHER parents expect so much. I am with you–she won’t even appreciate it just yet. And she will love all of the attention regardless of how spoiled she is on the day. It’s supposed to be about family and celebration. 🙂

Love the outfit, but have to comment about the parties. I have been to some insanely OTT parties for kids far too young to appreciate it (life-sized posters printed with child’s likeness, Rolling Stones-themed party for two-year-old) and I just don’t see the point. Kids want cake, and playtime, and to see their friends. My mom always reminds me that when I was young, the rule they told parents was to invite only as many friends as the child is old (so a 3yo’s party would have 4 total, including birthday child.) I haven’t been able to stick to that, but we’ve gotten darn close. So anyway…kudos for the counterculture resistance.

Good point about the kitchen. We usually keep it in C’s bedroom, but I think I’ll move it to the living room so there’s more space (and the adults can actually sit down!).
E’s 2nd birthday wasn’t even 2 hrs long, everyone ran around, played kitchen, and then crashed from eating cupcakes. It was fabulous, short & sweet. I wish the same for you!
Good luck with E’s bday party! Colin also turns 2 on Sun, and we’re having a couple friends with kids over on Sat. I haven’t planned anything for them – they’re all in the “around 2” age-range, so figure 2 hours of running around with each other is enough. I sure hope it’s enough…

Thank you! And I figure I’ll save up the few crafty cells in this body for when she gets older enough to really care about her birthdays. I can remember birthdays from elementary school where my mom would have a color theme, etc. and I cared about the effort of a homemade purple cake and purple crepe paper streamers. I’ll wait until then 🙂
I love this outfit – the skirt is so cute and I adore the zipper detail on the side. And kudos to you and your husband for not buying in to the crazy, overboard birthday parties for children (not that I would expect two eminently sensible people like you to do so) – the whole thing is so over-the-top and sets up unrealistic expectations for kids, imho.

All she is getting from us is a few more people for her new dollhouse (she needs some kids, and I want her to have more than just white blonde people), and maybe a crown. That’s it. We never have gone all-out for her parties and I hope never to. She will just be excited to run around with a couple friends and eat cake. 🙂
You are looking so chic Allie! We always did really small parties for our boys. Our family was small and we just never wanted to get into the big theme party deal, it was not us. For most of their birthdays they got to have a friend or two or three over, what they wanted for dinner, their choice of cake and a movie with their sleep over friends if they wanted to see something in particular…we kept gifts to a minimum and always toys on their birthdays. We saved the clothing/toy combo for Christmas. I hope Emerson has a great birthday and that you don’t stress out too much!
