A New Anthem…
Thanks to my friend Lexa for sending the video to me this morning. I just HAD to share it with all of you! Do note, there are NSFW lyrics and the occasional word on the screen of the video. Enjoy at your desk with headphones.
Update: It seems a few don't understand the video or why I would share it. I encourage you to listen to the lyrics, the video doesn't make any sense without them.
A blog post about this video. I see it in a different light after reading Lily Allen’s tweet and realizing I misread her use of Black dancers in the video: http://www.blackgirldangerous.org/2013/11/13/easy-white-bitch-words-lily-allens-new-video/
Loved it! Thanks for sharing. I’ll be sharing this one with my friends.
While I love the song, the video is fairly casually racist, even if Lily herself doesn’t think it is. This post sums it up pretty well: http://fatbodypolitics.tumblr.com/post/66848925755/blackinasia-lily-allens-racist-new-music
Thank you for this Galena, and I apologize for not replying sooner. I also shared another blog post discussing how this video is racist. Before Allen shared her tweet trying to justify the dancers, I thought choosing African American dancers was yet another point she was making about the music industry and how it uses them like a prop a la Miley. Unfortunately I was very wrong. 🙁
Oh sure, no problem! I do really like the song, but I just wish that Lily had realized what was so problematic with the video when critiques came out and apologized instead of getting defensive and saying “nuh uh I’m not racist and I’m offended that you think I am!” The issue is not that people think SHE’S racist, it’s that her satire appeared to be casual racism and not explicit commentary. The failure mode of satire is usually asshole, and that’s kinda how the video came off.
Lily Allen just posted this on Twitter: http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1rrk3og
The balloons about her Baggy Pu$$y were the best pop-culture retort I’ve seen in years! Love! It reminds me a lot of a grown-up version of the old P!nk song Stupid Girls.
This explanation from Daily Life might help 🙂
“Rejoice: overnight Lily Allen released a show-stopping new single, ‘Hard out here’. While Allen has popped up on several guest tracks her last album was released in 2009 and her returning single is a glorious assault on the entertainment industry/society in general. In her wonderfully snarky and sarcastic voice Allen takes a swipe at society’s expectations of women covering body image, sexism, slut-shaming and the glass ceiling. I don’t want to get too carried away but it may be your new personal LIFE ANTHEM.”…

Ha! Oh man, that is such a great video! Cheers to Lily Allen for saying what needs to be said in such a brilliant way. Thank you for sharing, Alison!
I LOVE Lily Allen.
Bahahaha! I am just laughing at what people who didn’t know what to expect from Lily Allen were thinking and how confused they must have been!~

Hi Allie,
I believe I saw you at Starbucks in Greenbelt with your daughter. I wanted to say hi, but didn’t want to interrupt your “coffee break” with the little one. You looked great!
That was probably me! Next time say hello!
