A Bra Fitting with Soma Intimates and a Giveaway

Soma contacted me and asked if I'd like to come to their boutique at the Westfield Montgomery Mall and get a bra fitting and try their Enhancing Shape Bra. I heard about this bra through InStyle, who considers it to be the solution for “ski slope” (the gap at the top of bra cups). I've always been a busty woman, but after years of breastfeeding, age, gravity, weight loss and gain, I've lost some of my breast volume and was interested in a bra that would address this issue and improve the allover shape of my bust.

In 27 sizes from cups A-DDD there's a Soma Enhancing Shape Bra for many women; the padded comfort straps and cushioned hook and eye closure ensures the bra is comfortable all day, while the smooth style makes it invisible under fitted knits. In eight solids and four prints this bra is anything but boring.

Visiting Soma Intimates was a pleasure; though it was a busy Sunday afternoon, the boutique was well staffed so each of us customers received quality assistance and an unrushed experience in the fitting room. I was partnered with Karien, who took me to a spacious fitting room to determine my bra size. She had me remove my shirt but I kept on my bra as she used a tape measure to size me. Karien then went out to the sales floor and brought back bras in the size she determined and one a cup smaller since the Enhancing Shape Bra does occasionally run big for some. We found that a 38D fit me best, and as you can see from my fitting room selfie above, the bra was pretty much invisible under Soma's Smoothing Seamless Cami. The bra did give a look of fullness to my bustline without making it look bigger (and without the dreaded “quad boob”), and the bra is super comfortable. No digging in the back, I can't feel any of the hardware, and I wore the bra all day and there wasn't any discomfort under the arms or in the shoulders. I was tempted to get the Light Nude which was very close to my skintone and would make for a perfect tee shirt bra, but sweater weather is here and I decided to indulge in the black and white Indulgent Lace pattern which is so beautiful and can be worn under thicker fall and winter clothing without showing. It's fun to have pretty bras that are also useful!

Karien (pictured above, I had to get a photo with her after such a pleasant bra shopping experience!) was so knowledgeable about bras in general, proper fitting, and of course knew the Soma collection inside and out. I loved how all the employees I interacted with were so friendly and professional, knowledgeable but not pushy. They told me about their Get Gorgeous Parties where you and at least three of your friends can schedule an event at your local Soma boutique to get fitted, all of you receive 15% off your purchases (or you can choose to donate that 15% to your favorite charity), and you receive a free bra for hosting. I also signed up for Love Soma Rewards, a free program where you earn points towards cash rewards, birthday gifts, exclusive offers, and free shipping when you shop online. After my experience at Soma, I know I'll end up a regular customer!

  1. Allie….PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE…..I’d love a new Soma bra in in black. I’m wearing this hideous “thing” I grabbed off the rack at Target last year which is a 42D – since I had a reduction 20 years ago I’m disproportionate so nothing off the rack really fits. A real bra fitting would be a dream ๐Ÿ™‚ Help a fellow mama working in the public sector out ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. I’ve been seeing the ads and thinking of checking out Soma. That deep purple is SO pretty, and I wear mostly black for work, so it would blend just fine!

  3. Nude – It’s not exciting but I can just throw it on and never have to worry about whether or not it will show.

  4. I’m in desperate need of a new tshirt bra, and they look to have several options in my size in addition to the Enhancing Shape. I’d get Light Nude to wear under white shirts, but I also really like the Blackberry.

  5. I’ve never shopped at Soma before, but it looks like they have great products! I love that lace print! I guess I’ll have to check them out sometime soon.

  6. I’d get it in light nude, so I could wear it under practically anything. So glad it comes in my unicorn size (big cup, small band)!

  7. I would probably get a bra in nude – as I tend to wear a lot of white shirts. Love Soma – I need to go again and get fitted, its been too long!!! Glad you found a great bra – it makes all the difference!!!!

  8. I’d probably stick with light nude – I live in Houston, so I have a long while left for button-downs and t-shirts before I can do too much layering.

Honestly my body has changed so much after having my daughter, I feel like I need to resize EVERYTHING. I even went up half a size in shoes.

  9. For fun, I would pick the feline pattern. What a lovely bra. Thank you for the wonderful giveaway.

  10. I would definitely choose the Feline-love that leopard print! I haven’t tried Soma yet, but I’ve heard good things.

  11. Allie,

Did you try on any of their dresses while you were at the store? At least online, it looks like they have some nice ones.

    Chris

    1. I did not… I didn’t see any in the store, though there may have been some near the register. I did admire their sleepwear, but I had Emerson with me (and Karl, as you can tell by the photos) so I kept my trip briefer than I would have liked. I will be back!

  12. Love, love, love your blog! I found it about a month ago and I’ve looked at it every day since then. As 40-something busty (36F)woman I’m always on the lookout for pretty AND comfortable bras. The ski-slope gap drives me crazy! I would enjoy the tapestry lace pattern for winter. How fun!

  13. I would go with light nude. I’d never heard of Soma before, but now I’m going to have to check them out. Thanks for the review!

  14. Nice! I’m so happy to hear you had a pleasant bra-fitting experience! I wear the same size as you – and I hope that if I win, I’ll look as good in one of their bras as you do (not intended to be creepy at all!!!). For practical reasons, I would probably go with a black bra, but I’d love to be bold and get the “blackberry” one! Purple is my favorite color ๐Ÿ™‚ My email address should be in my Disqus profile, but just in case it isn’t, it’s brynnash [at] gmail [dot] com.

  15. I have been wanting to try Soma’s bras for a while. I have a similar shape and seeing your experience will make me try them for sure. I love the feline print, leopard print always ups the sex appeal.

  16. I love soma! Like you, I’m a busty petite. I never understood why my bra straps always fell down and why the band would ride up. I used to wear a 34d but suffered from the spillage issue. Then, I went to soma and discovered that I’m actually a 32 ddd. The issues I had disappeared.
If I were lucky enough to win, I’d pick the moccachino color, as that’s a nude for me.

  17. I am also a big SOMA fan…I love the vanishing back bras…I am wearing one right now! The customer service at my local store in Milwaukee is very good; glad to see you also had a good experience! Sara

  18. The mini leopard slate is so cute! After this post I am definitely heading into Soma as it has been a while since I had a proper fitting.

  19. I’m another who already loves Soma! Love the Embraceable hipster panties, different bras, and also their dresses. I actually may love the dresses the most because they are so soft and comfortable and never need ironing. I’d like another light nude bra and the mini leopard slate.

  20. my three current bras are all by soma, and I love them. I’d love to add another to the rotation! and, I’d prob pick nude, none of the three are nude actually ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. I have been wearing the Soma Invisible back bras for about 9 months. They do wonders for the dreaded back roll. I do have problems with the straps falling and would love to try the Enhancing Shape Bra in Feline! Looks like the straps are wider and may help me with the slipping strap problem on my narrow shoulders. I too had a wonderful fitting experience at the Roseville, MN store with very knowledgeable and patient Kristin.

  22. Light nude or black. I was *this* close to treating myself to a fitting at Soma this weekend but ended up running other errands. I’ve never been fitted, it’s time!

  23. Soma does offer a great line of bra options – not just pretty but also well made! If I were lucky enough to win this giveaway, I would choose a super supportive bra in the girliest shade available for my daughter who is pregnant with my first grandchild. They are really strapped financially, and I know she’s going to need a more supportive bra during her pregnancy – she’s a 38DD when she’s NOT pregnant! The one you chose looks great, and I need that cami!

  24. The luscious mauve-pink Soma bra caught my eye. I usually wear nude or black bras but that deep pink color is pretty.

  25. I totally want the Feline print bra! I’ve stuck with the Whole30 plan (thanks for the inspiration) for 9 weeks so I need a new bra.

  26. Wonderful review. Thank you for sharing the photo because the cami seems great also. I would prefer the soft tan color, but there is lovely variety. ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. The wife has recently been introduced to Soma and has enjoy what she’s bought so far. She was intrigued by the Enhancing Shape Bra after receiving Soma’s email earlier this week. IIRC, a selection of Ivory is in the offing. Thanks for the blog, Alison.

  28. i have not tried soma brand, but as a busty curvier gal i would love to try a bra that didnt look frumpy… and OF COURSE it would be an animal print… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  29. Thanks for such an informative post! I think I’d probably have to splurge on the black & white lace one as well…so cute!

  30. I like the basic black. It is so hard trying to get a bra that fits and doesn’t cost a fortune.

  31. So am I the first person to say I would pick the Ether Blue – I didn’t read every comment… Thanks for the info as always!

  32. I always buy white, tan or black bras but I would love the blackberry color. I’ve never had a bra fitting but after hearing about your positive experience I think I should give Soma a try.

  33. I would love something funky – feline maybe. I am a customer and LOVE Soma – I had trouble with a bra and the return process was super easy even without a receipt.
Thank you for the chance to win!

  34. I love new bras! I think I would get the light nude, because I’m practical and would get the most wear out of it. Great giveaway!

  35. I LOVE Soma! I have two bra and both are Soma. They never hurt and they always look great. I would probably follow suit and choose a fancy patterned bra. Perhaps the mini leopard slate.

  36. Wow; those are beautiful bras! My personal favorite is the mini leopard slate, I think that’s what they called it. I am in desperate need for new bras. I have two on constant rotation and I believe they are two years old. Thank you for the chance to win. I’m a first time visitor; found you via Pinterest, from the all black capsule you did a year ago.

    1. Welcome to Wardrobe Oxygen! Best of luck with the giveaway, do get some new bras when you can as a proper fitting (once a year) and new bra (bras usually wear out after a year) will completely transform your figure and your wardrobe! ๐Ÿ™‚

  37. Nude! I bought the Sensuous Sides bra–it was very comfortable, but did not last as long as a Wacoal does. Sigh

  38. Good timing for me on this post and would love to win. I’ve never looked at Soma before — I’m a 34DD and spend a lot on Wacoal bras, but would love an alternative. I think I’d start with the Enhancing Shape Full Coverage Bra in Feline…

  39. I would love to try the Enhancing Shaping Bra in Tapestry Lace. I normally go with nude or black because I wear a 34DDD and color options are often limited. I have needed new bras for an embarrassingly long time, but haven’t taken the time to go exploring for something that would work better. Thanks for this post, I am excited to try them out.

  40. I like the white and black lace print too! I am at a point in my life where I buy bras in nearly every color if I find one that fits comfortably AND flatters! I have issues with straps slipping and the Enhancing Shape Bra looks like it has a more U-back which might help with that issue. Thanks for the review and the giveaway ๐Ÿ™‚

  41. While I love a good nude bra, I think that blackberry color is just beautiful, and as you say, it’s sweater weather!

  42. I would buy the red & black pattern. I own 2 bras from Soma and agree with your comments. What a pleasure to shop at Soma!

  43. I’d love to try a Soma bra in black! My weight has gone up and down the past few years, and being a busty woman (40C), it’s hard to find a well-fitting bra that stays up on the shoulders and doesn’t dig into me. Love your blog!

  44. I’m inneed of a new BLACK bra so that is what I would choose. A Soma just recently opened in our local mall. I may have to go check them out! Thanks for the review.

  45. So I have pretty boring undergarments so I would love the playful lace. What a treat to have something pretty and feminine and still very comfortable.

  46. I would be adventurous and try the mini-leopard slate. Love Soma and so glad you partnered with them. Have never had a bad experience there. I think they are the best for full figured ladies in this price range!

  47. I would love to have a fun patterned bra. I am so sick of nude, nude, and more nude. I’ve never been in their store but it would be wonderful to have a new resource.

  48. I LOVE Soma bras-so comfortable, with great support and shaping. I am presently a big fan of their Sensuous Sides Full Coverage Bra, which I usually wear in beige.

  49. Definitely Blackberry! It’s such a rich and intense color, and really beautiful. Something different than the standard black bra.

  50. Blackberry wins the day. It’s grey and rainy here in the Pacific NW, and a bit of color makes the outlook a bit sunny.

  51. I’m pretty traditional, so I would go with the light nude! Thanks so much for your review of the store and shopping experience. I keep meaning to check out the store in my area!

  52. I love the blackberry color. I’m disappointed that VS only has narrow straps right now, so once I finish weaning I think I’ll check out Soma.

  53. I typically wear a black or nude bra as they are so versatile, but I love the Tapestry Lace bra. It’s so pretty.

  54. Great giveaway! I love Soma but haven’t been in years because there is no longer a store close to me. However, I am happy to say that they are opening up a new location that is walking distance from my work. I can’t wait to check it out. For the enhancing shape bra, I’m loving that leopard/feline print.

  55. This is probably going to get weird, but this a topic I have a lot to say about at this moment in time. ๐Ÿ™‚ I have recently lost weight, and my breasts, which have been a 36DD for probably 12 years, are now substantially less. I am wearing a 34C, but after a couple of wearings, it is loose. The problem is that if it were just a size change, I could handle it, but my boobs are now just…different. I can’t figure out if I need a push up bra or just a regular bra or what. And don’t even get me started on my issues with sports bras… So I am definitely thinking I need to get to Soma. We have one here in my town. I would love to have a nude bra to replace the 36DD Fantasie bra that I ADORED before I lost weight.

  56. I really, really need new bras (and a fitting). I would go with the light nude color. I like not having to worry about what color bra I’m wearing under certain clothes!

  57. Love the mini-leopard print! I haven’t been to Soma in years – and I know I’m due to be re-measured. This would be a great excuse to go back ๐Ÿ™‚

  58. Soma is a brand I’ve been meaning to check out. Thanks for the review. I’d want to try on the Mini Leopard Slate bra.

  59. I viewed the selection of colors on their website and chose the color of Mochaccino, which is close to my own skintone.

  60. I fail to understand why they measure you in your old bra. My bra is squeezing in places it shouldn’t and I feel my size would be off if measured with it on. But, if it works, it works I suppose. I would choose a nude bra, which is all I ever own!

    1. Every time I’ve been professionally fitted it has been in a bra, I guess to hold them up? ๐Ÿ˜‰ But what usually happens is they return with a couple sizes, you try on, they come in and adjust and see which one is the best fit and go from there ๐Ÿ™‚

  61. Wow- that looks like a great bra! I’d have to go with a nude- despite my desire for fun bras, I still desperately need a nude go-to for every day.

  62. After literally walking out crying from the Victoria Secret’s fitting room, Soma is the only place that I will shop for bras now. I love their customer service, and will definitely need to try this bra! I would probably end up with the Light Nude, but if I saw the Tapestry Lace in person, I would probably splurge on both. Ha!

  63. Ooh, I’ve been wanting to try Soma, they just opened a store in our mall. I would get Soft Tan, I really need a good no-show bra for under light colored shirts!

  64. I wear a 36G and only 2 bras were available for me. They look great but they are only available online which is not the best way to try a new bra.

  65. I’m curious – I know in the past you’ve talked about proper bra sizing rather than the limited range available in many lingerie stores (usually ranging only from A-D cups). How do you feel this brand compares, especially since as I recall your real bra size is not what you were fitted into at Soma?

    1. Even Lane Bryant doesn’t have my size. Their bigger sizes (E, F and G) have a band that starts at 38 and I am 36. I know I am an outlier so the industry doesn’t cater to me but I see a lot of women with my dimensions so I don’t feel like an outlier. I shop at Nordstrom which is pricey but they always seem to have a good selection in my size that i can find no where else.

      1. Nordstrom is SUCH a great resource for bras, why do shops think that the bigger cups need bigger bands? I was a 36F for a long while and it was so hard to find bras! FYI BareNecessities.com is a great online resource to find the bras you like from Nordstrom in different colors/styles and often on sale ๐Ÿ™‚

      2. There are so many women out there who do not fit in the 34-38 A-DD range. I am a 32G/34F. I bet there are a lot of women who wear the wrong size. I did for many years.

    2. The last time I was fitted I was a 38DDD (back with my bra fitting post I was a 36 F but have changed) so when she suggested 38D I felt it MUST be wrong. However, this bra fit and fit really well. The other bras I have aren’t US brands, which explains a bit of the difference, but also I found that I wasn’t straight across the board 38D in all their bras. Some a 38DD fit better. I’ve seen this also with other brands, for example in Bali I’m a 36DD and Wacoal I’m 38DDD. I must say for Soma I found the quality excellent, the staff knowledgeable, and the bras COMFORTABLE, and not wobbly breast comfortable. I know this is a sponsored post, but I’m glad it was offered to me because it made me a Soma customer.

  66. This looks like a great product, and it comes in fun colors – which is hardly ever an option for me. I’d go with the mini leopard in slate.

  67. Looks GORGEOUS. I wear a lot of black dresses & tops (and usually am a V neck kind of a gal), so I’d probably go with classic black.
Me Me Me! Please? – Abby (Abbyforever (at) gmail .dot. com)

  68. Hi, my friend introduced me to your blog, and I’ve been reading using bloglovin every since! Thanks for you what you do. I’d like to enter the Soma giveaway, and I choose the mochaccino color. Thanks!

  69. Light nude. After discovering so many of your readers spend much more on bras than I do, I think it might be time for me to try some better quality bras. Past time, probably…

  70. I love the Leopard Slate, but my practical side would probably kick in and I would get the light nude. Wish I could find a bra that fits properly. I plan to visit Soma!

  71. Love Soma, I’ve been wearing the Enhancing Shape (36DD) for about a month and its a great bra investment. I need to add some leopard print to my wardrobe ๐Ÿ™‚ I also have their shaping leggings, great comfortable fit and not too thin fabric. Soma’s Cool Nights pajama line is perfect for those that have to be cold to fall asleep. They just opened a new location at the revamped Springfield Mall, you can get 20% off any purchase until Thanksgiving.

  72. Blue or light nude. I have no doubt I’m not in the right size anymore. I stick with Lane Bryant bras as those are the only ones I have found that I know fit semi comfortably.

  73. ooh, like you, I’m forever in need of nude bras, but I think I’d opt for “Feline” — the leopard print would actually be fun poking out from under a black tank for a rock-n-roll night out! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  74. Thanks for a great post! I have been fitted previously and think it’s so important and every woman should try it at least once. I would pick the Ether Blue…such a soft gorgeous color!

  75. I always love a good leopard/cheetah print bra – feline would be right up my alley. And that is a great fit on you, I’ve been curious to try Soma.

  76. I absolutely LOVE Soma. As a 34 DD normally, though now I’m pregnant I’ve gone up to a 36 DDD, it used to be almost impossible to find bras that were both cute and affordable. It was either ugly “granny” bras, or bras costing upwards of $90-$100. Soma was a breath of fresh air. They have so many varieties available, and they are ALWAYS having deals where you can buy one get one free and other discounts. I always suggest Soma to my busty friends, my college roommate is a 36DDDD and she found a strapless bra at Soma – that both fit comfortably and stayed in place all day. Seriously, I can’t say enough good things about them.

And I LOVE the mini leopard slate color of the new style, but hell who am I kidding, I’d take all of them.

  77. Without being too weird…that bra looks great on you, very flattering and seamless. I would love to try one in light nude, I’m always looking for invisible bras for light coloured shirts.
