Life, Intervening
I meant to have the Thursday part of the Starting Style from Scratch today… but life intervened. This area got snow Sunday, and school has been closed all week. And then my husband got a horrible stomach flu (he's currently upstairs quarantining).
Wednesday was our daughter's 16th birthday; if she was in school, I would be at work, but she was home, and it was her birthday, so we spent it together. And while we did that, her father was at home in horrible shape. So yeah… the post isn't complete for today.
I began crafting a few outfits for real-world scenarios based on the closet staples from Tuesday. And I hope to share them next week. I appreciate your understanding and patience.
I love pulling together outfits, it's a fun creative outlet and while making them it inspires future blog posts and newsletter content (you are subscribed, right?).
I appreciate all the feedback I have received thus far regarding this Starting Style from Scratch series. Keep it coming! I'll be back tomorrow with more in this series and have two additional posts already in the queue to keep the discussion going throughout this month and all of 2025.
Happy 16th to your daughter! Hope your husband is on the mend & that you can avoid catching what he has.
This series is goodโthank you. Iโm not ready to implement these things just yet but am glad that these posts are here to refer back to.
Your pics in the post today are helpfulโIโve been thinking a lot about needing a few items that can be easily dressed up for a few specific occasions. Iโd mentioned this in another comment so forgive me for repeating myself! Itโs just weighing heavily on my mind right now. I had a nice pair of black pants & a nice pair of dark trouser jeans but perimenopause has messed those up a bit. So, Iโm checking out some pants & blouses at BR Factory, just to see if I might find a good option for now. Thanks for the inspiration.
Happy Birthday to Emerson! Wishing Karl a quick recovery!
A happy birthday to your daughter and a get well soon to your husband. There’s always something, right?
Happy Birthday, Sweet 16 is a really special birthday, Iโm so glad you were able to spend it with your daughter.
I LOVE the short sleeve black dress,I hope you will tell us where to get one like it. I am going to need one as my black dresses are getting pretty old.
Thank you so much for this series I am learning a lot from your advice. Iโm looking forward to the next installment.

Oh my goodness! Happy Birthday to your daughter and safe healing to your husband! Take good care!
Happy Birthday to your daughter! How is it possible she is 16? I remember when she was born!
Your posts are fantastic, loving this “Getting back to basics” thread.
Sending wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2025.

Happy Sweet 16 to your daughter! I started reading this blog when she was 4! How time flies, right? Wishing her all the best with school and Girl Scouts.
Loving this series! Itโs hard to face, but after a certain age youโre more likely to go to a funeral than to a wedding and itโs important to have the right things. When my mom was at the end, I threw all of my black dresses, pants and sweaters in a bag and headed to my sisterโs house. We now refer to the funeral capsule as the โShiva Collection.โ (IYKYK). We sadly need it more than ever now that we are in our 50s! And kudos for taking family time! HBD to your girl!!!
Iโm loving this series! My biggest issue seems to be how to pair shoes/sneakers/boots with various pants styles to keep the whole look modern. After so many years of โskinnyโ styles, I am loving wider leg styles, but canโt seem to figure what footwear looks bestโฆ like many grown-ass women I have foot issues (plantar fascitis and bunions) so I wear mostly casual sneakers and and round or square toe short boots. I know you have past posts that touch on this but would love an update!
