Stylish Raffia and Straw Bags for Many Springs and Summers to Come
Want a bag that will go with most everything this spring and summer? Reach for a straw bag. Straw, raffia, wood, and bamboo accents are classic bag textiles for warm weather, and they are pretty timeless, too. I wanted to share some stylish raffia and straw bags for sale right now I think will remain chic for many springs and summers to come.

For example, I have a raffia clutch I bought at a boardwalk boutique in Rehoboth Beach two decades ago, and it's still stylish to carry with shirtdresses and linen pantsuits. I wrote this while searching for a similar timeless straw tote or raffia handbag I found I needed last year.

I wanted to share some of the best raffia and straw bags I've seen that will be stylish this year and years and years to come. My tips for buying straw bags that will remain stylish for many years to come:
- Either go basic AF or go OTT (over the top). The in-between is usually where you get caught in trends and bags can look more dated.
- Don't buy a bag with a visible logo or branding, unless it's high-end designer. And if it's not the real deal, go logo-free.
- Look for bags with built-in linings unless you're the kind of person who keeps their purse essentials in pouches
- Tan is timeless. Colors, black, chocolate brown, and lighter shades of beige and cream can be beautiful, but they can also be affected by fashion trends. If you're buying a one and done straw bag, keep the color neutral and classic.
- If there is leather trim, have it be the color you wear often in the warmer months. While in 2025 you can totally rock a raffia and black leather tote with brown leather sandals, in future years that mix may not be seen as chic.
- The same holds true with hardware; while mixing metals is stylish in 2025, in the future, you may regret having a bag with silver hardware when you are a gold jewelry kind of gal.
- Make sure it fits over your shoulder, even if you're wearing a jacket. While you won't be rocking a straw bag with a puffer coat, you very well may need to get it on your shoulder while wearing a denim jacket or trench. Bags should be practical as well as stylish.
- Is it comfortable in your hand? Will it snag your clothes? How hard is it to unclasp and clasp it closed with one hand? Not just practical, have your straw bag functional or leave it on the rack.

Straw goes with black, brown, navy, white, and cream. It can carry purchases from the market or be your cocktail party clutch. It won't wrinkle and is usually lightweight and flexible, making it great for travel.

When not in season, store your straw and raffia bags in a dust bag or old pillowcase. Dust can get into the nooks and crannies and damage the textile, leave it feeling sticky and grimy, and is near impossible to clean. Throw in a cedar or lavender. sachet to keep critters at bay and your bag smelling fresh for you next year.
As we head further into spring and summer, there will be more styles of straw bags, but know they sell out quickly. I tried to find one last July and was out of luck for the type I desired. I chose to write this now so if you're looking for a straw bag, you have time to check out a range of options and pricepoints!
Perfect timing. I was just thinking about summer straw bags.
True confession – I purchased my bag from Target for under $30. Will not cry alligator tears if it doesnโt last beyond this summer!
>>Will it snag your clothes?
Such a great point. last year, I put on my beautiful crochet sweater and threw my straw bag over my shoulder. Five minutes later, I noticed the bag had attached itself to a loop of yarn and my sweater was hopelessly snagged. Grrr!
This is a big issue! Last summer I headed out for a day of shopping in a new dress made of a slick, scuba-type, knit material, with my newish straw bagโฆsimilar in style to number 11 in first grouping above. I shortly discovered that the bag had roughed up (and ruined) the fabric in a section at hip level! I am now very careful to only carry it when wearing cotton or denimโฆno knits!
Good point! Same with beaded and sequined bags, need to be careful!
How do you all keep them clean from makeup and general grime buildup?
I learned from a straw hat company that if you use a solution of half peroxide and half water, dab and dry with a cloth, it can remove most stains that aren’t old.
