On the Wardrobe Oxygen Facebook page, a reader asked a question I have been asking myself since my favorite option is no longer available… I am searching for the best wool and cashmere sweater refresher sprays, and which ones on the market are the best to replace my old, now discontinued favorite? This is Michelle's question:

I have personally gotten so much use out of The Laundress Wool & Cashmere Spray for my sweaters. I love the smell & it’s been a great way to spray them & freshen them up between wearings. I also usually put them out on my back porch for a little airing out as well. This product is currently not available so I’d love to have recommendations for something similar.

I, too, used this wool and cashmere sweater refresher spray from The Laundress for many years. It was a great product to refresh knitwear, remove scents, and have sweaters ready for another wear without washing. On top of refreshing sweaters, this product also had a delicate, luxe scent. While The Laundress still has its wool and cashmere shampoo, the brand has yet to bring back the spray, and I know Michelle and I are not the only ones looking for an alternative.

I thought I'd share with you the research I've done to find a worthy replacement. Reading reviews, ingredients, and customer feedback, I think these are the best wool and cashmere sweater refresher sprays to achieve a similar result: removing odors, refreshing sweaters, and leaving a delicate scent that isn't cloying and doesn't compete with my favorite perfume.

Sweaters do not need to be washed after every wear; in fact to keep them in tip-top condition it is best to spot clean and reduce odors as often as possible and steer clear from the dry cleaners. I care for my cashmere sweaters at home (along with wool and many other yarns) and while I don't find it an arduous task, I do know my sweaters benefit from being laundered as rarely as possible. The 4 Best Wool and Cashmere Sweater Refresher Sprays

Like a dry shampoo for your sweaters, a sweater refresher spray helps remove odors and if made with certain essential oils and natural fragrances, not only smell lovely but, repel moths and other pests. These sprays usually have a fine mist and dry quickly to not damage or change the shape of your sweaters and have them ready to re-wear. The four best wool and cashmere sweater refresher sprays I've found on the market:

Clothes Doctor London knitwear mist

1. The Clothes Doctor

The Clothes Doctor has a line of knitwear mists in a range of scents that all work the same. Vegan, cruelty-free, packaged in 100% aluminum with a compostable label and reusable spray nozzle, The Clothes Doctor knitwear mists are made with essential oils to naturally repel moths.

The Clothes Doctor is a British company, so shipping will be exorbitant for us in the States. However, I found the knitwear mists sold at Revolve, which offers free shipping and returns.

Outback Gold Wool & Linen Spray

2. Outback Gold

Made in Idaho from a family-owned company, Outback Gold Wool & Linen Spray is a lavender—and vanilla-based product that deodorizes and refreshes sweaters and essentially any other textile in your home. Reviews state this product not only removes odors (and is a favorite with vintage clothing resellers), it does a good job of reshaping sweaters.

Outback Gold is a line of products from Desert Breeze Distributing, which also offers wool blankets, yarn, socks, sheepskin products, and wool care products. Amazon is an authorized distributor of Outback Gold.

Celtic Wool & Refresh Spray

3. Celtic & Co

Celtic & Co carries a Celtic Wool & Refresh Spray. Primarily a bergamot scent, it is vegan, cruelty-free, and in a recyclable aluminum container. Reviews say it isn't too intense of a scent and does a good job deodorizing sweaters as well as sheepskin slippers and lined boots.

Also a UK company, shipping is $10 and free for orders $350+. Celtic & Co is a sustainable 30-year-old company that also sells apparel for men, women, and children with women's fashion up to U.S. size 16.

4. The Lab Co.

The Lab Co. is a UK-based sustainable company carrying clothing and shoe care products. Founder Joshua Gilbertson considers The Lab Co. to be “skincare for fashion,” using the best ingredients and technology for quality care for your wardrobe. Scented with cedarwood, cinnamon, and myrrh, The Lab Co.'s Cashmere & Wool Mist is a highly-rated alternative to The Laundress.

The Lab Co. is sold at many major UK retailers, but it's nearly impossible to find in the U.S. without paying very high shipping fees. Your gal Alison found it for sale at Sportique, where shipping is free for orders $25+. Of course, right now, it is sold out, but I hope they restock soon, as they have carried this product for quite a while.

Have a Favorite I Didn't Share?

Since The Laundress discontinued their spray, I have been using my favorite DIY fabric refresher of water, vodka, and essential oil. But I do miss the beautiful scents and the ease of a premade product. Do you have a favorite wool and cashmere sweater refresher spray not listed here? Do share in the comments as it may be exactly what one of the Wardrobe Oxygen community is looking for!

  1. I, too, miss the Laundress wool spray. I still have a little left, but, as the amount of product continues to grow smaller, I’ve been wondering what to do for a replacement. I find it interesting that 3 of your 4 choices are UK products. They must take better care of their clothing than we in the US do! Thanks so much for this post. It’s the little things that make life more enjoyable.

  2. Hi Alison— Thank you for answering my question from our FB group! It’s odd to me that The Laundress seems to have bounced back from their issues a while back but are not making the sweater spray; I don’t remember it being one of the recalled products but might be wrong. I’m hoping they will bring it back but I’ll look into these options. Again, thank you!
