Talbots Denim Haul on a 16 Petite

I regularly recommend Talbots denim when folks are looking for jeans for midsize, petite, plus size petite, or those of us with soft curves. I recently shared I find Talbots jeans to be one of the best choices for apple shapes. When Talbots reached out inviting me to check out their New Arrivals, I decided to use this chance to do a Talbots denim haul on my 16 petite body.

Talbots Denim Haul on a 16 Petite

Talbots is one of the few retailers that offers plus-size petites and petites over a size 10. I am 5'3″, and as a grown woman, I fluctuate between a 10 and a 16W. Talbots is a retailer I can rely on for any of these sizes. From petite suiting to jeans, I appreciate the petite size range at Talbots.

Currently, I am hovering between 14 and 16 petite for jeans. For this review, I ordered all the jeans in a 16 petite for consistency and to ensure none would be too tight to review. I wanted to provide a range of denim silhouettes and washes from the Talbots New Arrivals. The styles I am reviewing:

• Talbots Straight Leg Jeans
• Talbots Classic Jean Trouser (two colors)
• Talbots Midrise Stovepipe Jeans
• Talbots Flare Leg Pull-on Travel Jeans
• Talbots High Waist Relaxed Jeans

All styles are available in the Talbots complete size range of Misses 2-18, Misses Petite 0P-16P, Plus 14W-24W, and Plus Petite 14WP-22WP. Some styles are also in long lengths; I will state when that option is available.

Talbots Straight Leg Jeans Review

Made from 93% Cotton, 6% Polyester, and 1% Spandex, the Talbots Straight Leg Jeans in Melrose Wash are a classic fit and wash that look chic now and will continue to be stylish for years to come.

I desired a petite-length pair of jeans in a dark wash for now and to wear for spring, fall, and into next winter. As an FYI, the Talbots Straight Leg Jeans in Melrose Wash are available in Misses Long lengths (Misses: 31″; Petite: 28 1/2″; Long: 34″; Plus: 31″; Plus Petite: 28 1/2″). 

I know many petite folks do not like a high rise, but I do. I appreciate how it goes over my belly, not segmenting me and not sliding down throughout the day. I like the rise of these jeans, the wash, and the true straight leg silhouette.

These are my favorite jeans from the entire Talbots denim haul, and I have already worn them out and about. The Talbots Straight Leg Jeans – Melrose Wash in 16 petite kept their shape, didn't stretch out, and are a good length for a low heel.

Talbots Classic Jean Trousers Review

As mentioned above, I decided to try the Talbots Classic Jean Trousers in two washes: ivory and Renwick Wash, which is a light stonewashed color. I have found that across all denim retailers, different washes are often different weights and fits. These denim trousers have a mid-rise style with a seam down the front of the legs, front slash pockets, and a stylish wide hem. Both washes are 99% Cotton and 1% Spandex; I ordered 16 petite in both.

The Renwick Wash trouser jeans are a tad heavier weight of denim than the ivory version but both were the same size and fit. However, the different weight of the denim had the jeans hang differently on me.

The Renwick Wash denim trousers have less give and hold their shape. The ivory pair, however, was no match for my booty and belly and stretched after a couple of hours of wear. If I had less pronounced of a belly or bum, I think the ivory denim trousers would have performed far better.

From the design of the yoke to the placement and size of the pockets, Talbots makes jeans that work with a curvy rear. Even with a midrise, the Renwick Wash trouser jeans did not gape on me or slide down through the day.

Talbots Mid Rise Stovepipe Jeans Review

Stovepipe jeans are slim through the hips and mid-thigh with a straight drop for the rest of the leg. The effect is a bit looser than a traditional straight leg jean. The Talbots Mid Rise Stovepipe Jeans I tried are ankle length and white denim, which is 66% Cotton, 16% Polyester, 16% Lyocell, and 2% Spandex; again, I ordered 16 petite.

White jeans are tricky; they are often a thinner denim than blue washes and can be transparent. I was pleased to find that the Talbots white Mid Rise Stovepipe Jeans were both opaque and a good weight of denim.

The stovepipe silhouette is a nice alternative to the slim ankle white jeans I have from last year (also Talbots; I believe these are the same ones). I also like the texture of the white denim, which adds interest and opacity. I think these jeans would look great with low-profile sneakers and sandals this coming spring and summer.

Talbots Flare Leg Pull-on Travel Jeans Review

I know a lot of you like and request reviews of pull-on jeans. Softer and more comfortable on the midsection and providing a smooth look under untucked tops, I get the love. However, I have never liked them on me. But I figured I'd take one for the team with this denim haul. I didn't expect to fall in love with them.

These are the Talbots Flare Leg Pull-on Travel Jeans in Hanover Wash, size Large Petite. They are also available in a darker Oxford Wash, but it is currently not available in Misses Petite.

These are so comfy, I get why they are called Travel Jeans. I could totally wear these travel jeans on a cross-country flight and not feel restricted. I wore them for a day working in the office, and after sitting, I didn't have to unfold the waistband or hike them up. They kept their shape so well that I wore them again the next day.

There are no front pockets, but I get it, as they would ruin the silhouette and some of the comfort. However, there are back pockets and cool front seams that elevate the jeans. The Talbots Flare Leg Pull-on Travel Jeans are excellent for those who have fluctuating figures as they will adjust without losing the style.

I am a big fan of the Flare Leg Pull-On Travel Jeans from Talbots and hope they come out with some different washes or even silhouettes for spring and future seasons. They're the perfect jeans for the boyfriend shirts we bought last year and the shorter sweaters I'm seeing this season that look best untucked (for example, this one I recently got and love)

Talbots High Waist Relaxed Jeans Review

As someone who is short, with a belly, round bum, and solid legs, I never thought I'd like relaxed jeans. But I have come to love them over the past couple of years, and I wanted to try a version from Talbots. I ordered the Talbots High Waist Relaxed Jeans in Allenby Wash, again in 16 petite.

I know that I am a 14 petite in some silhouettes, and in others, I am a 16 petite. I wanted this review to be consistent, so I stuck with the same size. I think I would have loved these jeans more if I got them in a 14 petite.

The Talbots High Waist Relaxed Jeans in Allenby Wash are an excellent weight and feel, made from 62% Cotton, 25% TENCEL™ Lyocell, 12% Polyester, and 1% Lycra® Spandex. The wash is on trend, the styling is on trend, and these would be a great pair of jeans for all but the hottest days of the year.

I have these jeans styled with sleek black ankle booties, but these relaxed jeans from Talbots would also look good with a lug sole, as well as sneakers and sandals. I like them enough that I think I'll get myself a pair in the smaller size.

In Summary…

If I weren't shopping for this review, I would have sized down in a few of these jeans. I find the customer reviews on the Talbots website to be detailed and extremely helpful. Some of the reviews let me know ahead of time that I would likely want to size down. I can't think of any other retailer that has such a loyal fanbase to leave such extensive reviews and I am grateful (and often pay if forward with my own submitted reviews).

The jeans made of the lighter-weight denim performed just as any lightweight denim performs on my soft curves. If you like lighter-weight denim or Tencel blend denim and prefer a midrise, you likely will fall in love with the Jean Trousers. Check out the reader reviews; outside of those who have very personal issues, the rest are glowing.

I continue to be impressed with the Talbots denim collection. On-trend washes and silhouettes but not so trendy they'll be passé in a season, quality denim and manufacturing, and details that work great with a grown woman's shape. With one of the most extensive size ranges of any jeans retailer, I continue to feel good recommending Talbots jeans to the Wardrobe Oxygen community.
