Red Is Still the Color of 2026: Dresses, Accessories, and How to Wear It All Year
The color red never goes out of fashion, but this summer? It is having a moment and I am loving it. Tomato red showed up on both Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter 2026 runways, from Valentino to Carolina Herrera to Balenciaga showing it's a hot color trend for summer and will continue into fall and winter. (source) Using billions of client data points, StitchFix named Chili Red their 2026 Color of the Year. (source) Prada, Celine, and Chanel all featured poppy red in their latest collections. (source)
In 2025, I wrote about red having a moment, with bright primary red replacing the warmer tones of 2023's “Tomato Girl Summer.” But for Summer 2026, there isn't one specific shade of red that's on trend. You will see the return of tomato red, warm flame-colored red, coral/red combinations, a darker cool red, and that clear, bold primary red from 2025. Essentially, whatever red works with your skintone and your personal tastes is a great choice for this year.
And since red has been on the fall and winter runways, this isn't just a summer trend. Red apparel, and especially red accessories will continue to be chic after Labor Day. And because red never goes out of fashion, this is a great year to stock up if you love red so you can enjoy it now and years from now.
How To Wear Red in 2026
You may recognize this outfit from my Universal Standard Stretch Linen Review. This is the Universal Standard Kuki Top and Palazzo Cargo Pant, both in size XS and I have been wearing the heck out of this head-to-toe red look. I want to show this, because I know a lot of people find red a lot, and it doesn't have to be, especially in summer. Some tips for wearing red in 2026:
- Find Your Red. I have a warm, olive-leaning complexion and I find I can carry of warm reds best. If you have a cool or pink-toned complexion, you may prefer a cool-toned red or one with a hint of berry or plum. Very pale and very dark skintones can carry of clear primary red extremely well. But honestly, if you love the shade of red it can work.
- Play With Neutrals. Red is classic with black and white, but it can feel quite modern with neutrals. Try khaki, cream, brown, olive, gray, and taupe. Wood, raffia, leather, and suede neutrals give different effects; in general glossy or luxe textiles elevate and textured matte finishes (like raffia, suede, and wood) give a more casual and daytime vibe.
- Fabric Weight and Finish Affects Impact. A stiff red poplin skirt will feel more red than one from drapey linen. Red satin will be bolder than red sandwashed silk. If red appeals to you but you don't want to look like a fire hydrant, play with fabrics.
- Break It Up. Switch out the self belt of a red shirtdress with one of raffia or red leather. Style a red linen shell and trousers with a navy slouchy blazer. Balance the red of a pantsuit with a blouse in olive or brown.
Red Summer Dresses for 2026
I love a red dress for summer; it's one and done style that has maximum impact. With a switch of shoes and accessories it can go from day to night, desk to drinks, work to weekend. Here are 12 red dresses in a range of styles and sizes that caught my eye:
Top row: one (10/12-38/40) | two (0-20/22 & petite) | three (0/2-16/18) | four (XS-XXL) | five (XS-XL) | six (XS-3X & petite)
Bottom row: one (00-40; I own & love) | two (XS-2XL) | three (XS-3X & petite/tall) | four (XS-3X & petite) | five (00-18 & petite) | six (XS-XXL; code ALISON15 for 15% off)
A red midi or maxi dress works for almost any summer occasion. Style with white sneakers and a straw tote for a casual Saturday. Swap in kitten heels and a clutch purse for dinner. Add a navy or tan blazer or a cotton cardigan and you've got a work outfit.
And while I have you, let's discuss wearing red to a wedding as a guest. While I wouldn't wear fire engine red sequins, you can do a red print or a darker shade of wine or brick. For casual, outdoor, and destination weddings, dresses in coral-red and flame red prints are acceptable.
Red Linen Separates
Red linen is a big trend for this summer, and a great way to incorporate red into your wardrobe without necessarily rocking it head to toe. While I am a big fan of a red linen matched set, the pieces separately can be true wardrobe workhorses. Red trousers with a navy or black and white Breton striped top, with an olive linen shirt, a cream sweater, a tan blazer and white tee. A red linen shirt can go from being tied over a poplin midi skirt to tucked into wide-leg jeans to worn as a swim coverup.
Shop the collage: one (00-20 & tall) | two (XXS-XXL & petite) | three (00-20 & tall/petite) | four (00-16) | five (0-20/22 & petite/tall) | six (00-18 & petite) | seven (14-32) | eight (XXS-XXL) | nine (4 sizes) | ten (XXS-XXL & petite/tall) | eleven (XXS-XXL & petite/tall) | twelve (XS-XL)
Red linen looks great with white and all shades of blue denim. With khaki, stone, navy, white, and olive chinos. With shades of pink, orange, purple, and turquoise. And red always looks great with red prints, as well as graphic prints in neutrals or in bold two-color combos (think olive and cream, black and white, navy and light blue).
Red Summer Accessories and Outfits
You don't need to commit to a full red outfit to enjoy the red trend this year. Accessories are the easiest entry point, and are actually considered a very stylish purchase for 2026. (source) A red sandal or sneaker, clutch purse or raffia tote, sunhat or sunglasses, earrings or a beaded necklace can make maximum impact and update your existing closet.

The open-knit red tunic (#1) is one of my favorites in this collage because of it's versatility. Wear over a swimsuit, style over a short dress, pair with a white tank and shorts or pants, style with a skintone cami and summer jeans. Black is classic, but so is red! The red architectural halter-neck swimsuit (#7) provides coverage and support with elegance and a bit of sex appeal.
That red straw tote (#16) is what inspired this entire post. It shows how a single red accessory can provide maximum impact. The red sunglasses (#2), red leather clutch (#10), and red belt (#11) are the types of accessories you can rock this summer but all the way until the end of the year and can transform your current closet without having to change up your current aesthetic. And those red leather ankle-strap sandals (#18) can go with dresses, shorts, pants, and jeans now until the end of September (and possibly later depending on where you live).

Red is a great color for the beach or pool. Pairing with black, navy, white, cobalt, turquoise, and pink, it's a great pop with your existing swimwear, coverups, and beach gear. The red swimsuit (#1) is in sizes S-3X and gets rave reviews for fit. A red plastic tote (#6) or canvas tote (#16) is a classic that you can use for the beach and pool this summer and for many summers to come. And why not add a pop of color with sun protection with a red UPF 50 sun hat (#10)?

Beaded necklaces are back; add them to your current chains for what is called a “neck mess.” This red beaded necklace (#10) is bold enough to be worn solo, or will pair beautifully with silver, gold, and other beads. The breezy red blouse (#3) can be worn open over a tank or cami, tucked into trousers for work, worn untucked with chinos or denim cutoffs, and will continue to look great into early fall with jeans. And I've been obsessed wit that dupioni swing jacket (#8) for a while. Sizes XS-3X; pair with your summer dresses but how chic would it be this winter with a black fitted turtleneck and trousers?
What Colors Go With Red?
Red is more versatile than you may think. It can go from winter to spring to summer to fall with a switch of complementing colors. A few of my favorite combinations:
Red feels summery with pale pink and ice blue, bright violet and turquoise, bold shades of pink and chartreuse. Come fall, take those same red items and give them an autumnal vibe when paired with brown and camel, olive and navy, wine and plum.
Red always works with black and white, whether it is separate or in a print. Navy, white, and cream give a nautical vibe when paired with red. Red feels like vacation when paired with brown, khaki, and olive. Glam up red with gold. And red always looks great with every color of denim: faded to rinse, white to black, and everything in between.
How to Wear Red If You're Not Sure About It
You do not need to wear red if you don't feel comfortable in it. You can be the most stylish person in town and not own a single item that is red. But if you want to dip your toe into the red trend for 2026, here are some ways to try it:
- Red Shoes. Away from the face, red shoes are a way to rock the color without it feeling overwhelming. A pair of red ballet flats are classic. I also love a red low-profile sneaker to wear with everything from jeans to dresses. And a red leather sandal is the perfect shoe that will go with pretty much everything currently in your closet.
- Red Bag. A red raffia tote is a great addition this summer and will be a joy to use summers to come. A red leather clutch or tote works year round. As with shoes, a red bag goes with absolutely everything and does not need to match to work.
- Red Lips. Red lipstick can feel intimidating, but this summer you'll find a lot of reds that are really wearable. I have the Violette_FR Lip Nectar in Souci d’Automne and find it really easy to wear, it lasts a good amount of time, and feels great on the lips. Merit's lipsticks are sheer and look really natural; Vermillion is a warm red that looks like you've always worn such a color. RMS Lip2Cheek in Beloved is a sheer bright red that just looks so fresh and pretty on most any skintone; code ALISONG20 gets you 20% off at RMS. And Ruby at Jones Road Beauty is that French Girl Red that looks amazing with no other makeup.
Frequently Asked Questions About Styling The Color Red
Is red still a fashion trend in 2026?
Yes. Red dominated Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter 2026 runways and StitchFix named Chili Red their 2026 Color of the Year. It's not going anywhere.
What shade of red is trending in 2026?
Two shades are both having a moment: tomato red (warm, slightly orange-leaning) and poppy red (bright, clear, primary). That being said, most any red is chic in 2026.
What colors go with red?
White, navy, camel, brown, tan, black, and pink all work. For a bold pairing, try red with more red. Monochromatic works better than most people expect.
Can women over 40 wear red?
Heck yes! Red has no age requirement, wear it with joy!
How do I style a red dress for work?
Add a navy or khaki linen blazer or a cotton cardigan in olive or camel. Swap sandals for kitten heels or loafers.
What is the best way to start wearing red if I'm nervous about it?
Start with a red lip or a red accessory like shoes or a bag. One piece against a neutral outfit is enough to be part of the trend without feeling like you're in costume.
Can I wear red to a wedding as a guest?
Yes, if the red is more of a berry or wine color. For casual, outdoor, and destination weddings, coral-red and flame red printed dresses are appropriate.
Does red work for all skin tones?
Yes, with some nuance on shade. Warm and olive complexions tend to work well with tomato red and orange-leaning reds. Cool and pink-toned complexions often look better in blue-reds. Very pale and very dark skintones look beautiful in primary red.

Thanks for the advice! I’m trying red thong Birkenstocks with olive pants and tomato colored pants with a black tee (and channeling g my inner James Dean). What to do though with a rather formal red silk shirt?
How about with a pair of brown barrel pants or cropped fuller-leg pants in twill, chino, or a tech fabric? The dressy/casual juxtaposition is so hot right now.
I’ve always loved the color red. I even once painted my office wall red and since childhood have claimed red as my personal favorite color. But now, Allison, I feel like it’s ruined for me by this current administration. How can I wear it and not—absolutely not—look like a fan if MAGA? I threw away my red sailing hat. How can I make red the color if subversion?
Honestly, if you don’t wear a red baseball cap and you add some color that isn’t white or royal blue, I think you’re fine. I also think silhouette makes an impact: a conservative red pantsuit, red pumps, red pencil skirt, red sheath dress… those out of context may feel very Fox News, but when paired with pink, baby blue, olive… it cancels it all out. I refuse to let negative idiots take away my joy or my pride in my country. Rock the red because it’s a beautiful color and let it continue to be a color of power and joy, not hate.
This is so timely, Alison. I bought a pair of BR Factory red linen pants last week. They are very bright (for me) but this post makes me see that I’ve got multiple top options in my closet already. I have a few tops that are navy or navy/white striped but I’ve also got a light blue cotton cardigan & I’m loving those colors together.
Could you share the shade of Merit lipstick ?
I have Vermillion, which is in the collage. I also have their limited edition color aperitif and Cabo and… another one more brown. They’re nice and I love the packaging. Nothing from Merit has disappointed me; I regularly use their complexion stick and have a few of their blushes in my dressing table. I even like their fragrance. I don’t love their mascara but you’ll find in that regard I’m in the minority.
Just the other day I bought a sleeveless shift in tomato red at H & M and the print viscose red and white shirt to wear over it–all for $45, so if I get tired of red which I seldom wear, not a huge deal.
Passing a bus stop I noticed a woman wearing red Mary Jane flats with jeans and thought it looked terrific.
I have been wanting a pair of red mary jane flats for a while now; I may pull the trigger this fall!
That color red is smashing…and those earrings! I love them. What a great way to celebrate!
