Tomorrow, February 28th, is the first of what I expect to be many economic blackouts. For one day, let us go without spending any money or using banks.

The key to a successful boycott is press. Boycotting and economic blackouts gain power with each mention in the news, each social media post, each video of action taking place. Reputations are hurt, and it makes it clear how many folks are really involved.

According to research from Harvard political scientistย Erica Chenoweth, only 3.5% of a populationโ€™s participation is needed to create serious political change. You can survive one day without spending money.

If you have an emergency or need to spend money, I encourage you to use cash and choose small, local, and independent businesses and prepare in advance.

Yes, folks will still be spending the same amount of money, but this is the last day of the month, and this small act can impact big corporations. Gosh, just thinking of my retail days and how it would have been to have one day with no sales or even half the amount of sales as the year prior would be detrimental.

Don't believe you make a difference and boycotts don't work? Look at Target. Since rolling back DEI initiatives, the company has lost 15 billion dollars and is facing a class action lawsuit from Target investors. Target's stock is down 10% since the end of January, and Tesla's stock is down 17%. Yes, boycotts work if people actually participate.

Right now, it is only one day and a very tiny sacrifice for most of us. What's the harm in participating? I encourage you to join, and I hope you won't click on my links and buy tomorrow! I'll see you back here at Wardrobe Oxygen on Saturday.

  1. I wish I could participate, but I have an eye doctor appointment on 2/28 (that took 2 months to get) and desperately need new glasses, both activities of which will require credit card use

  2. My family and I are “in”. One member is skeptical that this will do any good, but is willing to humor me. I have already canceled my subscriptions to WaPo, NYT, and amazon Prime, but added a sub to our local-ish paper that is still relatively independent. Thank you for continuing to publish this information! “See” you on Saturday. Until then, happy no-spend day. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Thanks for posting this!! I have not seen much about it in the general news or online. I have never shopped at Walmart because of their business practices and canceled my subscription to the WP.
I saw somewhere that it is also planned for March 28…I’d love to see it for 2 days next month…and 3 days in April.
