I was a foolish traveler in my youth. I'd pack heels and teeter on cobblestone, overpack cute tops and underpack socks, and one too many times I ended up soaking and shivering in a country where I didn't know the language and the next shop was hours away.

I learned the hard way that a travel jacket is not optional. It's the piece you don't think you need until you desperately do. The difference between a good travel jacket and a great one? It's functional and fashionable… and it does exist! In fact, I found 12 great options in a great range of sizes!

TL;DR

The Quick Version

The best travel jacket is lightweight, packs small, handles wind and light rain, and doesn't make you look like you raided a sporting goods store. This roundup covers 12 options across a range of styles, price points, and sizes, including petite, tall, and plus sizes to 3X. Every jacket here is updated quarterly so you're always seeing current availability.

Every jacket on this list is lightweight, packable (meaning it doesn't take up your whole suitcase or weight limit), and handles wind and light-to-moderate rain. Most are water-repellent; a couple are fully waterproof for when you know you're walking into actual weather. All of them are stylish enough that you won't feel silly wearing them to dinner if your plans (or the forecast) change.

And because “one size fits most” is a lie we've all been sold, I specifically curated this list to include petite, tall, and plus size options. Most of these go up to at least XXL; several offer plus sizes to 3X. Because all women deserve to look good and feel comfortable when traveling.

What Makes a Great Travel Jacket

Before we get to the picks, here's what I looked for and what you should too:

  • Packability. Can it compress into itself or into a small pouch? Does it take up less than a sweater's worth of space? If it can't pack flat or into its own pocket, it's not a travel jacket, it's just a jacket.
  • Weather resistance. There's a difference between water-repellent (handles a drizzle, some mist, a light shower) and waterproof (you are genuinely protected in rain). Most of these are water-repellent. I'll flag which ones are fully waterproof.
  • Weight. If you're lifting it and thinking “hm, that's heavier than I expected,” keep scrolling. A good travel jacket should surprise you with how little it weighs.
  • Style. This is where most travel jacket roundups fail, because they treat this as a nice-to-have rather than the point. If you're going to wear it every day of a trip, it needs to work with your actual clothes.
  • Layering potential. Can you throw a thin puffer or a fleece underneath for colder days? The best travel jackets work as a standalone layer in mild weather and as a shell in colder conditions.

The Best Packable Travel Jackets for Women

I've organized these by style profile rather than by size or body type, because every woman deserves every option. Size information is listed within each entry.

1. The North Face Daybreak Hooded Jacket

Best for: The woman who wants a classic outdoor brand with a cleaner aesthetic Sizes: XS-XXL

The North Face has been making reliable technical outerwear for decades, and the Daybreak is the version that doesn't scream “I'm going hiking.” I know, I own it, I love it, and I think it's chic enough to rock from The City of Lights to The Big Apple. The water-repellent finish is strong enough to survive a soggy day in Seattle, the hood is there when you need it and can be stowed when you don't, and the silhouette looks modern/Scandi and is customizable thanks to the drawstrings. If in doubt, size up to make room for a fleece or sweater.

2. Athleta Jetset Bomber

Best for: The woman heading somewhere adventurous who still wants to look put-together Sizes: XXS-XXL, Petite and Tall available

A bomber silhouette is one of those shapes that works across body types and dress codes, and the Jetset earns its name. And yep, this is another jacket I personally own and love from throwing over activewear for an early morning at the gym to pairing with some wide-leg trousers and sneakers for exploring a city. I purchased it after a friend bought it for a summer traveling several countries and found it utter perfection. I find the fabric handles movement without bulk, the zipper pockets keep essentials secure, and the petite and tall sizing is a genuine asset since most travel jackets are only available in standard lengths.

3. Quince Comfort Stretch Short Trench

Best for: The woman who wants to look like she packed on purpose Sizes: XS-XL

Quince has built a reputation for giving you the look of a designer piece at a fraction of the cost, and this trench delivers. It reads as polished and intentional, which matters when you're traveling somewhere where looking put-together is part of the experience. My friend took hers to Paris, Spain, and Norway and said it looked elegant but kept her dry in an unexpected drizzled and comfortable. The stretch fabric means it moves with you and the shorter length makes it more versatile and more packable. Size range is more limited here, so if you're outside XS-XL, scroll down for better options.

4. Lands' End Squall Packable Waterproof Raincoat

Best for: The woman who knows it's going to rain and wants actual protection Sizes: Regular, Petite, Tall, Plus Size (2-26W)

Again, I am recommending a jacket I personally own. More than once I have shoved this in my suitcase last-minute and been so grateful I did. From Manhattan to Key West, the beach to the campsite, this jacket has done me well. The name “Squall” tells you exactly what it was built for but the range of colors and seasonal prints keeps it from being too utilitarian. The plus sizing through 26W with petite and tall options is rare in the waterproof shell category, which makes this a standout for anyone who has struggled to find technical outerwear that actually fits.

5. Kuhl Women's Stretch Voyagr Jacket

Kuhl Stretch Voyagr Jacket in Soft Pine rated a top travel jacket for women by Wardrobe Oxygen

Best for: The woman who wants versatility across a wide range of conditions Sizes: XS-XL (with insulated and longer trench versions available)

Kuhl sits in that outdoor-meets-lifestyle space, and the Voyagr is a good example of why that category exists, and why it's recommended time and again for travel. The stretch fabric gives you real range of motion, an interior zip pocket keeps travel essentials secure, the water resistance is solid for most travel scenarios, and the fact that there are insulated and longer trench versions means you can pick the level of coverage that matches your trip. Worth noting: this one runs closer to a technical aesthetic than a fashion one, but it wears well and packs smaller than you'd expect for how substantial it feels.

6. Lululemon Rain Rebel Jacket

Lululemon Rebel Rain Jacket is considered a top travel jacket by the Wardrobe Oxygen community

Best for: The woman who wants a longer hemline without sacrificing performance Sizes: 0-20

If you're looking for more length without sacrificing style or space in your suitcase, the Rain Rebel is for you. Top rated for good reason; it looks good and performs great in inclement weather. The hood adjusts and actually stays put, interior and exterior zipper pockets keep items secure, and the adjustable waistband means you can cinch it when you want more shape or let it skim when you don't. The size range caps at 20 (and reviews say it runs a bit narrow), but for those in the size range, this jacket is stellar and IMO, worth the price.

7. Coldwater Creek Pack-It Jacket

The Coldwater Creek Pack-it Jacket in Cinnamon

Best for: The woman who needs serious weather protection and inclusive sizing Sizes: XS-3X, Petite available

It's 2026, and this ain't your mama's Coldwater Creek. This retailer is a great destination for quality basics like its Pack-It Jacket. Read through the thousands of glowing reviews and you'll see many happy customers who were glad they took this jacket on their travels. I also appreciate the size range and details like a stowable hood and cinchable waist.

8. Eddie Bauer Girl On the Go Trench

eddie bauer girl on the go hooded trench is the best travel jacket for women in midlife

Best for: The woman who wants a travel jacket that looks like an actual coat Sizes: XS-3X, Petite and Tall available

If there is such thing as an iconic travel jacket for women, it would be the Eddie Bauer Girl On The Go trench. Truly waterproof, recently updated with a more modern silhouette and better fitting hood, and a travel-safe interior pocket, the GOTG is the GOAT. The XS-3X size range with petite and tall options is one of the best on this list, especially for such functionality.

9. Uniqlo Cotton Blend Short Parka

Uniqlo Cotton Blend Short Parka is a highly rated travel jacket for women

Best for: The woman who wants water resistance with the breathability of cotton Sizes: XXS-XXL

Uniqlo has mastered the art of making technical performance feel like everyday clothing, and this jacket is proof. The water-repellent finish works without making the fabric feel plasticky, and the breathability means you're not trapped inside a sweat-generating shell after twenty minutes of walking. It packs down into its own pocket, the price is reasonable, while being a modern and stylish jacket.

10. COS Technical Hooded Parka

COS Technical Hooded Parka Jacket in Brown

Best for: The woman who wants European style with actual function Sizes: XS-L

COS makes clothing for those who want clean lines, considered design, and fabric that holds up over time, and this hooded parka fits the bill. The “technical” descriptor is earned: it handles weather without looking like it's trying to and is easy-care machine washable. The limited size range (XS-L only) is a real drawback, but if you fall in that range and you value a more design-forward aesthetic, this jacket will make every other travel jacket in the airport look like an afterthought.

11. Columbia Women's Weekend Adventure II Long Shell

Columbia Women's Weekend Adventure™ II Long Shell is a top travel jacket for women

Best for: The woman who wants a trusted outdoor brand with extended sizing Sizes: XS-3X

Columbia is a brand I swear by: since 1938, this family-run company offers consistent quality, solid weather performance, and some of the most inclusive sizing in outdoor gear. The Weekend Adventure™ II Long Shell length adds coverage without bulk, it's truly waterproof while being breathable, travel-friendly zippered pockets and a two-way front zipper offer convenience and style flexibility.

12. Cotopaxi Impermeo 3L Hooded Shell

Cotopaxi Impermeo 3L Hooded Shell Jacket is a great travel jacket

Best for: The woman who wants her travel jacket to bring some joy Sizes: XS-XL

Every other jacket on this list plays it relatively safe with color, and there's nothing wrong with that. But if you are the person who wants her rain jacket to be a whole vibe, the Cotopaxi Impermeo is for you. The brand is known for its colorblock patterns and its commitment to using leftover fabric, which means each colorway is genuinely unique. The 3-layer construction provides real weather protection, the three zipper pockets provide security, and the technical specs hold up against brands twice the price.

How to Layer Your Travel Jacket for More Warmth

A lightweight travel jacket is not a winter coat, and it's not trying to be. But with the right layers underneath, most of these jackets will take you well into cold-weather territory.

For mild cold (40s-50s°F), a long-sleeve top or light merino wool layer under any of these jackets is enough. For temps below 40°F, add a full-zip fleece or a packable puffer jacket underneath. The shell of your travel jacket keeps the wind and moisture out; the layer underneath handles the insulation. This is how you get a two-season jacket out of a single piece.

A packing-friendly way to add more warmth is warm up the tips of your body: a hat, gloves, and insulating insoles can make major impact and take up very little space in your luggage.

Frequently Asked Questions When Shopping for Travel Jackets

What makes a jacket “packable”?

A packable jacket compresses into its own pocket or a small pouch, taking up roughly the space of a water bottle or less in your bag. The jackets on this list pack flat enough to tuck into a day bag or the corner of a carry-on without taking over your space.

What's the difference between water-repellent and waterproof?

Water-repellent means the fabric is treated to make water bead off in light rain or drizzle. Waterproof means the jacket has a membrane (often GORE-TEX or a proprietary equivalent) that keeps water out in sustained rain as well as sealed seams. For most travel scenarios, water-repellent is enough. If you know you're walking into real weather, go waterproof. The Lands' End Squall and the Columbia Weekend Adventure are the most fully waterproof option on this list.

Can I use a travel jacket as my only jacket on a trip?

Yes, for spring, summer, and fall travel in most climates. For mild winter travel or destinations with sustained cold, pair it with an insulating layer underneath rather than trying to find one jacket that does everything. For true cold or consistent inclement weather, you would benefit from a more technical outerwear garment.

Which of these travel jackets works best for plus size women?

The Lands' End Squall (2-26W), Eddie Bauer GOTG Trench (XS-3X), Coldwater Creek Pack-It (XS-3X), and Columbia Weekend Adventure II (XS-3X) are the strongest options for extended sizing.

Which travel jackets have petite or tall options?

The Athleta Jetset Bomber, Lands' End Squall, Coldwater Creek Pack-It, and Eddie Bauer GOTG Trench all offer petite and/or tall sizing.

How often is this list updated?

Quarterly. Links and availability change, and I'd rather you shop from a current list than click on something that's sold out or discontinued.

  1. I took the Northface Daybreak in that off white colorway to Iceland in July and it was cute enough for city days and sightseeing. I stayed dry in the rain. It was technical and sporty enough for hikes and outdoor activities too. The only time I swapped it out for a truly waterproof jacket was when hiking behind waterfalls or the day we went glacier climbing. The daybreak is roomy enough for a light fleece underneath on cooler days.

    1. Thanks for sharing your experience with the North Face jacket! I’m considering it and would use it in Scotland and London. Surely it would work for both (assuming I’m not caught in serious rain)?

  2. Oh, you’re timing is perfect! I’ve got a trip coming up this summer that will involve some possibly chillier days with rain or maybe no rain, so I’ve been thinking about jackets. That Northface has me intrigued. Question: does the fabric feel soft or more like a typical rain jacket fabric and same question for the Athleta version? I’ve got a Northface puffer but have not seen any of the rain gear in person.

I tend to prefer a jacket that is softer but do appreciate some rain resistance. My plan was to take the cropped Trench that J Crew Factory sells (have it in khaki already and do like it) but I wasn’t sure if it would work that well in light rain. Thanks for this!!

    1. The North Face one is a stiffer fabric and matte, the Athleta one is drapey but it’s lined and with the pockets and cuffs it has good shape and a bit of weight t it. I have the J. Crew Factory cropped trench and I adore it, but it cannot handle more than a light drizzle.

      1. I love the Athleta one as well. Curious what size you have it in, Alison? I think we’re similar in size. TIA!

      2. Thanks, Alison, for this info! And, I appreciate your thoughts on the J Crew short trench too. Very helpful!
